Earlier, he had played a role in the founding of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel, and was a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst

Ages in Chaos is a book by the controversial writer Immanuel Velikovsky, first published by Doubleday in 1952, which put forward a major revision of the history of the Ancient Near East, claiming that the histories of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Israel are five centuries out of step. He followed this with a number of other works where he attempted to complete his reconstruction of ancient history, collectively known as the Ages in Chaos series.

Ages in Chaos represents the kind of provocative read one needs to stimulate one's own thinking. In this book Mr Velikovsky compared the Bible's historical events with those evidenced in particularly Egyptian sources but also other Middle East sources. it is based on the ancient literary sources (of which modern "scientists" are hopelessly ignorant, and to which they are ideologically opposed). These sources have led Velikovsky to a "catastrophist" view of the emergence of the world that we know.

Ages in Chaos is the second book by Immanuel Velikovsky, first published by Doubleday in 1952, which put forward a major revision of the history of the Ancient Near East. A second volume was due for publication shortly after this but was postponed and expanded into four volumes, two of which (Peoples of the Sea and Ramses II and his time) were published in the two years preceding his death, and two of which remain unpublished in print (The Assyrian Conquest and The Dark Age of Greece) -however the manuscripts have long been.

Immanuel Velikovsky (1895–1979) was a Russian Jewish psychiatrist who in later life immigrated to the USA and embarked upon a second career as a self-styled iconoclast, polymath, and 'intellectual heretic' with some gobsmackingly unorthodox theories. Ages in Chaos (1952) was the first in a series of books where, to the derision of pretty much every archaeologist and ancient historian in tenure, Velikovksy attempted to single-handedly rewrite the chronology of the Near East. His starting point was that there was no generally accepted date for the Exodus from Egypt.

A wonderful book, evidentially based, logically presented and argued, but well outside the mainstream scientific framework. Ages in Chaos represents the kind of provocative read one needs to stimulate one's own thinking....it is based on the ancient literary sources (of which modern "scientists" are hopelessly ignorant, and to which they are ideologically opposed). These sources have led Velikovsky to a "catastrophist" view of the emergence of the world that we know. His catastrophism is directly opposed to the fundamental theoretical underpinnings of Darwinian evolutionary theory itself, "uniformitarianism"--the idea that things progress in a slow, uniform fashion. Unfortunately for the Darwinians, catastrophism has been proven by the meteor or comet strike that 65 million years ago struck the Yucatan and wiped out the dinosaurs....The explosion of the Island of Thera north of Crete around 1500 b.c., another demonstrable event, wiped out the Minoan civilization at its high point. These incidents are known facts that lend credence to Velikovsky's developed and refined claims.

I really enjoyed reading this book, and even though it was written decades ago, it does have valuable research,

In this book Mr Velikovsky compared the Bible's historical events with those evidenced in particularly Egyptian sources but also other Middle East sources. The author seemed to do an excellent and exhaustive job of finding parallels that, according to his conclusions, showed that the contemporary historical time charts were out of kilter by about 600 years. It takes some serious powers of concentration to get thru this book and keep up with all of the names and comparisons used by the author (this is not light reading).

It is not that well written, but you will feel you understand Ancient History for the first time. Velikovsky started with the premiss if neighboring countries all have memories of cataclysm, it was logical that they were all describing the same event and they should be considered to have all taken place at the same time. Modern archaeology considers the Bibles History a fable and have the ego to believe that they no more about Egypt history than the Egyptians themselves ever did, but if you believe them you would also believe that Israel and Egypt never had communication with each other. On the Israeli side modern scholars have no idea who the queen of Sheba was and on the Egyptian side they also have no idea where Hatsheput's God's Land or Punt was. To add to all the confustion they have them separated in time by over 500 years hundred years. After Velikovsky's realignment both histories dovetail and align perfectly. One gets the sense of understanding Ancient History for the first time, as I already mentioned. Velikovsky does not claim to have the knowledge as to whether Salomon lived further back in history or Hatsheput life was not so far back, but that can eventually be figured out? Also under this new alinement Thutmose III who came right after Hatsheput conquered Palestine from 2 princes and stole all this tremendous treasure consisting of Gold, Silver and Electrum (A mixture of Gold & Silver) Chariots and other valuable things. He brought them all back to Egypt, and it is all recorded on a Stella at Karnak Temple in Luxor. While in the Bible Shishak did the same identical thing, (When Salomon died the kingdom had been divided between his two sons) he conquered Israel and Juda from Salomon's sons and brought all of Salomon's treasure back to Egypt. Lastly in this review of mine anyway, I want to mention the Exodus. Scholar today believe the Exodus of the Jews took place under the rule Ramses the Great, one of the most powerful pharaohs ever, but under Velikovsky's realignment it took place between the middle and new kingdoms, when the Hyksos ruled. In the bible the Israelis during their journey out of Egypt mentioned that they saw the hordes of Amerikites coming. Modern Scholors today call them a small tribe. The Hyksos coming would have been hordes. Maybe Scholars don't like the idea of David putting the Egyptians back on the throne or Akhenaten coming after Salomon so it was natural to find a copy of the Palms or Songs of Salomon in Tell el-Amarna (which has been done. Leading present day scholars to conclude that Salomon copied them) It should be a must read for anyone seeking a true education.

I bought these for my son but I may reread these books, and see if they hold up to what I thought then.
I have been looking for this book for awhile. I finally found a reasonably priced one through Bookcrazy. The book is in very good condition although the vendor had made remarks about the condition of the book which I thought were greatly overexagerated. I will certainly order through this vendor again if I find a book that I wish to purchase and they have it. I have been a fan of Velikovsky for many years and I have been trying to replace my paperbacks of his works recently. Buy from this vendor with confidence in their description of the bok. They tell it like it is by being truthful and by telling the buyer what is wrong with the book even though the remarks seem trivial. I suppose if a buyer is looking for a perfect used book he/she might be disappointed if there might be a slight imperfection such as a very small 1/8 inch rip in the back of a dj. If so, buy a new book. 'Nough said.
