I've looked at some online books/sources that teaches beginner Japanese, but after using this in my college course, I'd say that this is definitely one of the best resources out there if you want to learn Japanese. You'll start out with Hiragana, Katana, and slowly get into Kanji, while learning basic grammar plus vocabulary from chapter to chapter.

I've used this for 2 semesters now and I couldn't be any more impressed. I've looked at some online books/sources that teaches beginner Japanese, but after using this in my college course, I'd say that this is definitely one of the best resources out there if you want to learn Japanese. It follows a very similar structure throughout the entire book, but I'd say it's the perfect formula for learning the language. You'll start out with Hiragana, Katana, and slowly get into Kanji, while learning basic grammar plus vocabulary from chapter to chapter. I can't say how effective this would've been for my if I was trying to self-study, as I'm a person who needs a little bit of a push when it comes to self-studying, but if you have the motivation and desire to learn, this book is more than perfect.

One year ago, I didn't know a single Japanese character, but now I can easily read anything with Hira/Kata and basic Kanji. One thing I recommend is that it never hurts to use online resources along with your textbook. For example, there is a good amount of Kanji in Nakama 1, but there's only so much a chapter, if it's useful to always learn some more on your own. By the time you reach the end of the book, you should have no problem with basic conversation with even native speakers. It does help if you have any prior knowledge, maybe you've watched anime? Japanese drama? But even without it, this book should be a great starter for those who do want to learn.

I love the textbook I used it for my Japanese class. The only bad thing about it the book came in very poorly conditions.
But overall is a good book it has helped me a lot with Japanese.

I use this textbook for class. It is well layed out and pretty easy to understand. Make sure you order the SAM book as well. Or make sure with your professor what they want you to have.

This book is in very good condition. I was very happy and the price was much better than that at the school for a book in not as good condition. The school does give 50% back at the end of the year. But we still saved about $30.

This is a great resource for learning Japanese, but you will need to buy the Student Activities Manual separately. At first I thought the price of the book was steep, but I am able to use it for three semesters so I feel much better about that.
