Profiles in Power Series. 57 primary works, 57 total works. In recent years historians have been preoccupied with broad questions of structure and process, and many have become suspicious of biography and the 'Great Man' approach to history. Nevertheless many students and readers continue to be drawn to history by their interest in individuals. Biographies abound, but often their scale and personal focu. ore.

Peter Woodward, Nasser, Profiles in Power (London: Longman, 1992). Pp. 167. - Joel Gordon, Nasser's Blessed Movement: Egypt's Free Officers and the July Revolution (New York: Oxford University Press, 1992). 254. Alain Silvera (a1). Published online by Cambridge University Press: 23 April 2009.

I recommend this book especially to advanced history students who want an in-depth examination of Hitler's power in a compact 230-page book. The book includes footnotes, an index, a chapter on further readings, and a chronology of events.

This is part of a series of interpretative books which analyze the major features of the careers of key political figures in world history since 1500. Nasser is an outstanding figure of the postwar Middle East. Premier of Egypt from 1954 to his death in 1970, he had extraordinary achievements to his name. Nasser transformed the political and economic situation, and set the country on a path to industrialization and socialism which, though modified, has made Egypt the largest industrial power in the Middle East. This book surveys his life and in doing so provides an introduction to the whole history of the postwar Middle East. While many of Nassers ventures in international affairs were ultimately unsuccessful or unfulfilled, Woodward shows how full and enduring was his political and economic legacy to Egypt itself.
