Joseph DeVito does a great job with this book. Unfortunately, I logged into the lab just a little bit ago and discovered that the code I had been given was expiring already.

Joseph DeVito does a great job with this book. I probably never would have enjoyed my class though if it wasn't for my amazing speech professor Jeff at Centralia College.

Books à la Carte also offer a great value for your students-this format costs significantly less than a new textbook.

Designed for introductory courses in communication, human communication and speech communication, this text surveys the broad field of communication, including intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group and organizational, public, intercultural and mass communication. The book is divided into seven parts, each of which is introduced by a unit titled "Preliminaries", giving readers a firm grasp of research, theory and skills. The sixth edition features new coverage of critical issues, such as sexual harassment (Unit 18), and key topics such as self-concept and self-esteem (Unit 3). A supplementary pamphlet, "The Public Speaking Guide", focuses on the skills of effective public speaking. Interactive pedagogy, helping students master both theory and skills, adds cohesion to the text's presentation.

One of the worst things I've ever bought from Amazon. Not commenting about the book or the matter but the online electronic kindle version of the book that I rented from amazon. It is basically a bootleg photocopied version of the book with a non user friendly page flipping feature. The app is useless. Freezes frequently. Flipping through pages is terrible. You can never understand where you are. The search feature and the go to page features are terrible. Scrolling using the slider at the bottom of the screen is useless. Extremely difficult to cross reference any topic or subject matter. You can highlight but what's the use if the app and book keeps on freezing and just misguides you. Please donot use the electronic version. Just order in advance pay a few extra dollars and get the actual book. Your grades will thank you for that.
I found the concepts in this book to be well laid out. I was concerned that I would not be able to understand the content, as I read some scary reviews for the book when I ordered it, but it was a required book to purchase for my communications course. I was pleasantly surprised. The terms were described well, although you would sometimes have to read an entire section in order to understand the "whole picture" but who can really be upset about that? We are supposed to do a little bit of reading.

The images were also helpful in a number of cases.

This got a 4 out of 5 star rating for me.
Bought this for a class, it was required. That said, I HATE this book. I am a reader, I love to read; it's what I do in my free time. For me to actually hate a book is unheard of really. This is a textbook, and it is definitely packed with a lot of information; too much. It is unbelievable to me how many terms have been created for different aspects of communication. He seems to wander off the topic of communication also. The author goes on and on and on and on and get the picture. Since it's a textbook, students won't get a vote about it for the class.
I bought this for class and it gives a lot of insight to communication. The wording is simple and easygoing to read. You aren't overwhelmed with details, but there's enough there for you to understand the subject. Great book.
We purchased this brand new. I would NOT buy used now. It comes with an EXCELLENT add from pearson lab but also A simple little booklet, containing invaluable advice in areas for every student including test anxiety and additional sites and points of value for studying and more. In just skimming the text so far the text has kept me both interested and wanting to dig deeper into the book its self. The topics are brilliant as are the approaches to things people fear like speaking to groups. The authors are seeming to try to make you laugh and relax more than get overly technical with it. I look forward to this volume and the class.
The most frustrating thing about this book, though interesting, is that the terms throughout the book are unclear. Reading the terms in the back are fine, but the definitions don't match up with what they say IN the actual chapters. Some terms aren't even defined in the back. Some bolded terms don't even give a clear definition in the chapter. It's very vague and you just keep reading everything before and after trying to understand the word. Poorly written. At least my professor is great and knows her stuff, or I'd really FAIL this class.
I like how cheap this book was. It isnt very different from the newer 13th edition and I like to have books in print.
It was a good book with minimal damage, but just today I found the book and decided to pull off one of the many oddly placed pieces of tape reading "QUALITY USED BOOK" off to find things saying "Instructor use only," "NOT FOR SALE," "student access prohibited," etc. etc. I don't mind that I own a copy of this book that I shouldn't own (according to U.S. copyright laws and the back of this book lmao) but it's just that this seller went to such great lengths to hide it from me, the customer. It's very unsettling and weird. Basically, I didn't get what I paid for.
