When Oskar Reinhart (1885-1965) bequeathed a significant part of his remarkable art collection - chiefly of French nineteenth-century painting but also containing a number of outstanding Old Masters - to the Swiss nation, he did so on condition that the works of art would never be loaned. As a consequence the many very important works in the collection have not been discussed in major exhibition catalogues and have not received the scholarly attention they deserve.

Mariantonia Reinhard-Felice. Oskar Reinhart (1885-1965) trained as a businessman and worked in the family firm of Volkart Brothers in Winterthur. At the age of 39 he left the company to devote himself to his art collection, taking up residence in the villa 'Am Romerholz' in Winterthur, built by the architect Maurice Turrettini in 1915. The villa 'Am Romerholz' was restored and expanded in 1997-98 by the Zurich architects Annette Gigon and Mike Guyer.

Mariantonia Reinhard-Felice is curator of the Oskar Reinhart Collection "Am Romerholz," Winterthur. Can you tell us a bit about the museum’s history? The Oskar Reinhart Collection ‘Am Römerholz’ is enduring evidence of the life’s work of a great collector, the businessman Oskar Reinhart, who was born in Winterthur in 1885. The collection mainly came together in the early 1920s and contains a finely honed selection of masterpieces of European art. The main emphasis is on French paintings from the 19th century and early 20th century, which are seen alongside important examples of earlier art. What makes this museum unique?
