Northrop of Yale University called The Meeting of East and West. It is the book that really started me on this philosophic quest that has now lasted 47 years.

Northrop of Yale University called The Meeting of East and West. Northrop's text, The Meeting of East and West, is a must for anyone who is interested in the philosophical and cultural differences between the East and West. It is as relevant today as it was when it was written in 1946.

Its central thesis is that East and West both must learn something from . The Logic of the Sciences and the Humanities, New York: Meridian Books, In. 1947. Reprinted in 1983, Ox Bow Press.

Its central thesis is that East and West both must learn something from each other to avoid future conflict and to flourish together. He was appointed to the Yale faculty in 1923 as an instructor in Philosophy, and later was named professor in 1932. One early claim by Northrop in Ch. 2 of "The Meeting of East and West" was that Eastern Thought in general (really most applicable to Chinese thought) deals with the world as an undifferentiated aesthetic continuum.

Start by marking Meeting of East and West as Want to Read . Northrop gives and excellent analysis of the philosophical foundations of various would cultures. His view of the "East" is dated but still holds merit.

Start by marking Meeting of East and West as Want to Read: Want to Read savin. ant to Read. It is clear that Northrop writes out of the 1940s and 1950s - his proposal for a synthesis of cultures includes a change in religion/theology via the arts. The idea that we can find a way to bring together different cultures is dated and hopefully abandoned.

Clever
One of the great, "lost" books that made a big impact when it was first published after WW-II, when the author tried to awaken the western mind to the alternate views of Eastern thinkers. At that time we had been fighting a most vicious race war against the "barbarians". For me, as one deeply brainwashed in the Western view (especially science) this was a true awakening.

Expand your mind by working through this book (it is work because it covers a lot of ground that will be unfamiliar). As Einstein is reputed to have said: "An expanded mind never returns to its original shape." Go for it, blow (up) your mind.

Perhaps the most incisive book I have ever read. Difficult, demanding, comprehensive, brilliant. When read in conjunction with Pirsig's "Lila", Whitehead's "Process and Reality", and Northrop's "Logic of the Sciences and the Humanities", it elevates one's understanding to a high level. Professor Northrop draws inspiration from the undifferentiated aesthetic continuum and hits bulls' eyes on targets most philosophers fail to see. Not for nothing did Pirsig regard Northrop as his mentor.

Though writing during and after World War II, Northrop's analysis of American and world political and social thought is spot on and more applicable today, with the Health Reform debate, than ever. This book has opened my eyes to the underlying philosophical differences and similarities between people, and the need to understand said philosophies in order to mitigate conflict.

Great book. Good service
Throw her heart
For what it's worth, this book, which I have not read, was a key influence on Robert M Pirsig, the author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. This is from his 1995 paper on "Subjects, Objects, Data and Values":

"For those who would like more information about this "Conceptually Unknown" than I can give today there is a valuable book called Zen in the Art of Archery by Eugen Herrigel from which I derived the title for my own first book. When the Zen Archer refers to an "it" that shoots the arrow he is referring to what I mean by Dynamic Quality. For those who prefer to stay more within the confines of Western analytical thought there is a book by Prof. F.S.C. Northrop of Yale University called The Meeting of East and West. It is the book that really started me on this philosophic quest that has now lasted 47 years."
Elastic Skunk
This is one of those truly great books that slaps your mind awake, offering you a completely new world view and interpretation of intellectual history. This book is partially responsible for my choice to study for a PhD in philosophy. It was a life-changer for me and is especially relevant now with its novel, and I believe, accurate understanding of Mexican culture. A monumental work!
