Robert Paxton, Julie Hessler. EUROPE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY offers a comprehensive, yet streamlined narrative of twentieth-century Europe. The scholarship and currency is top-notch as is the book's excellent consideration of important socio-cultural issues in the twentieth century, including youth movements and feminism.

This book was required reading for my 20th Century European History course as part of my university degree program. I should start off by saying my knowledge of history is truly horrible. The subject didn’t interest me at all when I was young, and I paid as little attention as possible. The book jumped back and forth in time a lot. It often focused on one geographic area and/or topic and described events that happened over several years, and then it moved to a new area/topic and went back in time. The problem is that events were usually pretty intertwined. Things discussed in one section were often relevant to things discussed in other sections from the same time period.

Europe in the 20th Century. It gives an accurate depiction of the turbulence of Europe throughout the 20th century - with revolutions and revelations taking center stage. As with all history books at some points the reading is a little dry,,,because history can become a little dry at times

Clearly the best text on the subject. Filled with graphics and maps. It covers the political, social, and cultural history of the era with perspectives from the famous rulers to the common person. It is organized strictly chronological. This leads to areas being split up between chapters. For example, the Russian Revolution is covered in one chapter, Lenin and the NEP later, then Stalin later on in the text. Just the right amount of detail for the text not to be overbearing with great recommendations at the end of the chapter if you want to read more on certain subject presented.
like the last book this book was somewhat hard to follow. But I was still able to Ace my class.
A wonderful and insightful account of one of the most critically impacted continents of the focus century. Paxton and Hessler captivate any history enthusiast effortlessly

good price and fast shipping. thank you!!
It saved me a lot of money going this way. Excellent text, received fast and easy.
As far as history textbooks go it is very well written, extensively sourced, and has a good index. Apart from that Paxton writes in an impartial manner which is refreshing, rarely espousing his own ideology or given to excessive poetics. I am giving this 5 for the suggested readings at the end of each chapter which is quite extensive for those who wish to approach the study of 20th century Europe with more depth.
