Available in a 2-volume format, Nachalo is the most exciting text available for beginning Russian courses. Written by a respected team of Russian scholars and linguists, Nachalo presents grammar functionally and teaches students the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing within the context of a wealth of cultural information. The abundant practice material in Nachalo ranges from focused and controlled to open-ended and communicative. Nachalo features an on-going story set in Russia with a cast of Russian and American characters, exposing students to new vocabulary and structures in authentic situations. Most exciting of all, Nachalo includes the most extensive package of support materials for any beginning Russian text on the market, including a video tied specifically to the text, shot on location in Moscow. The Second Edition is even more powerful with a text-specific Website and an all new student CD-ROM.

I purchased this book for a college Russian language class and it's frustrating to work with most of the time. As a stand-alone book it's difficult to learn Russian because there will be words used throughout the book that are never identified or translated. It helps to have a dictionary at hand. It also helps to use this book as a reference and not as the main source of learning. It works great side by side with an instructor reading through the pages with you, but on its own it's just not as helpful as I'd have wanted it to be.

Some of the words that are translated are done so very briefly and with a shorthand sort of flare. Instead of asterisks for marking certain notes or phrases a circle symbol will be displayed. Once you understand how the quirks work, and how to find the translated words you're looking for in a dialogue, it does help in making this book easier to work with but there are no side notes or legend to help in doing so.

I also don't relate or understand the use of actual characters. This book will revolve around the lives of several families. I don't particularly like that I have to keep up with fictional lives of a family in order to learn a language. (Our instructor had videos that went along with the book - cast with live actors.)

Though the chapter review pages (in blue) are helpful, they often seem to omit certain exercises or words learned in the chapter. Not every term displayed in a chapter will be mentioned in the chapter review words. I have noticed they are mentioned in the very back glossary of the book though. Just seems like poor navigation to jumble up words.

The accompanying workbook for this book, Nachalo Book 1 2nd Edition, also doesn't seem to correlate the homework based on the chapter. It's a challenge and maybe that was the intent, but I feel like it's just poorly put together for a textbook.
WONDERFUL. EASY TO READ AND HELPFUL WITH CLASS WORK. Glad I found it for the price as a used purchase; as new would be too expensive.
Great buy, good book and fast delivery
As Expected
I used Moctb before and found that this book in combination with a class is excellent.
Pretty good book over all, but you will need either the CD it comes with or a good professor to really understand it. :)
