This task is best understood in terms of what is called the production function, . an equation that expresses the relationship between the quantities of factors employed and the amount of product obtained. It states the amount of product that can be obtained from each and every combination of factors.

The sand production failure model is developed based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure model as presented in Section . Predictive models for sand filtration and retention in gravel packs and applications by means of typical test data are presented. View chapter Purchase book. This is shown in Figure . and represented by Equations . and . The Mohr-Coulomb model describes a few material properties. Drilling and Well Completions.
The sand production model incorporates shear and tensile failure mechanisms. A criterion for sand erosion in failed sand was proposed based on a force balance calculation on the sand face. It is shown that failure, post failure sand mechanics and flow-dominated erosion mechanisms are important in the sand production process. The model has a small number of required input parameters that can be directly measured in the lab and does not require the use of empirical correlations for determining sand erosion. The model was implemented in a numerical simulator.

Production of 1 metric ton of casting from ferrous alloys generates circa 1 metric ton of waste, which due to containing certain amounts of harmful and dangerous compounds should undergo a reclamation- at least of the main component, which means a silica sand grains. Sand production in oil and gas wells can occur if fluid flow exceeds a certain threshold governed by factors such as consistency of the reservoir rock, stress state and the type of completion used around the well. The amount of solids can be less than a few grams per cubic meter of reservoir fluid, posing only minor problems, or a substantial amount over a short period of time, resulting in erosion and in some cases filling and blocking of the wellbore.
