Details (if other): Cancel. Thanks for telling us about the problem. In December 1987 This book provides much prime material on how the Soviets really live: what they eat, drink and wear; how cramped are their apartments and with what facilities; how many books they read; how any TV sets, roads and cinemas they have; why shopping is so difficult; and so on. The Soviet economy, the author contends, is much smaller than is commonly thought.
Following Ronald Reagan's statement to the Soviet press that living standards in the USSR were a third of that in the USA, this book was written to examine the CIA study upon which his statement was based. The author also analyzes the Soviet economy and reveals how Soviets really live.
BIRMAN comes from Igor Birman's book Personal consumption in the USSR and the USA (1981). I'll explain later why Birman deserves a place here. He says caloric consumption in the SU is a little less than in the US, even though it should be higher due to a younger population that performs more extenous work in a colder environment. Russia (official) refers to official statistics of food consumption in kg coming from this book that references Torgovlya SSSR (another statistics yearbook), and converted to calories used coefficients developed by the US Dept. USDA adjusted and unadjusted is data from the US department of agriculture.
