I first discovered Doreen Tovey's books about Siamese cats and other animals a long, long time ago, so I was delighted to find recently that some of the books are now back in print. Spanning a period of around 50 years (her first book, Cats in the Belfry, was written in 1957) Doreen's autobiographical novels describe her life in the Somerset countryside with her Siamese cats and husband René (better known in her books as Charles). A cast of two- and four-legged characters.

This is an account of life in the author's household which is dominated by Siamese cats. Tovey believes the longer one keeps Siamese cats the battier one gets. After the death of her husband, Doreen Tovey's West Country cottage seemed empty, with only herself and Saska, and so she bought Shantung. Following Saska's untimely death she aquired Saphra, who provides evidence to support Tovey's theory that cats are becoming more intelligent, no matter how many crazy things they do.

As usual, Tovey does not disappoint. If you are a cat lover, particularly Siamese, her novels are wonderful slices of life. This particular book is slightly sadder in tone. It was written after Tovey's beloved husband died and touches on her grief. It also involves new kittens and how life continues on regardless of our grief.

The book resonated with me.

Doreen Tovey is a masterful storyteller. I find myself often laughing out loud at the antics of the various animals. And of course the Siamese who are always up to something. Really - if u hv cats, this is for u.

Doreen Tovey is tops when it comes to writing with humor and warmth, and her cat books show that completely.
I ordered this book for my 90-year-old mother who loves to read. I remember borrowing this book from a library years ago and laughing so hard at all the antics of the author's Siamese cats. Now that my mom has finished reading it, I am going to borrow it and read it again.
