The title isn't lying--it is indeed an art book. The designs are more for whimsy than they are for serious chicken raising, and I use the term 'designs' lightly. There is a materials list and step by step instructions, but it still leaves the builder with many questions. Others have liked the book, but unless one of the seven odd styles suits you then it's hard to make the case for this book.

I was looking for some inspiration and easy to follow plans for building a new chicken coop and decided to give this book a whirl. I've been keeping chickens for 8 years now and am located in more of a rural, somewhat suburban area. Much of the information seems to be geared toward the urban/city chicken keeper. The plans are nice and there are several ideas I plan on implementing, but when it comes to size and predator security, and ventilation, most of the coops in this book seem to be lacking. Perhaps if you don't have to worry about raccoon and weasel night raids the plans as presented will work for you, but I would suggest using more secure door latches and hardware cloth as opposed to bird netting. Raccoons will bust through just about anything they can stick a hand through and plastic bird netting is no challenge at all. They're also extremely apt at unhooking latches. I also prefer more vented areas in my coops, but I live in the South, so that is a consideration. If you're up North you can probably do with less ventilation.

All in all I don't regret my purchase and quite enjoyed the look and feel of this book. The plans are laid out in an easy to read manner and the step by step directions are helpful. It is a nice addition to my poultry library.

This is a good book. I would have given it a 5-star rating had I not been ripped off by paying for it when I could have downloaded it for *FREE* from Tractor Supply. If the author doesn't think his work is worth people paying for his book - then why should we? So don't. Download each and every plan and supply list from the Tractor Supply website. Wish I had.

I used this book to build my duck coop - loved that it had all the pictures, good instructions and wood list for each coop. The ducks seem to like the coop as well.

Not much room for real live chickens.

I like this book, but I definitely don't love it. This is my first big project and I'm left feeling rather confused about a lot of the things I'm supposed to be doing. A lot of the directions are given assuming I know what I'm doing and I've spent a rather lot of time googling. Having said that though, my coop is shaping nicely. I've made a few little adjustments, but I think my hens will be very happy with the end result.

Even if you never construct one of these coops, if you are a chicken lover like me you will absolutely enjoy having this book in your library.
It does have a lot of good construction ideas with full measurements and details on the type of materials needed for each project. Everything is explained step by step with excellent photos also.
The added bonuses of composting as well as experiences by those new to chickens and how they dealt with whatever came
up makes this book useful to all who are just starting out as well as those who have had chickens forever.
Overall this is a very well written as well as an entertaining book.
This is a great little book for building some very simple and basic chicken coops. Again, one needs to consider their climate and weather conditions, but all of these coops (there are several styles) are very "builder friendly". The author also gives you complete materials lists for each coop and pretty much walks you through the build. Great pictures and a few different ideas for coops too. I wish I would've bought this book before I started to build my coop!!
