Much of this book is all about exploring the options for meeting your energy needs through natural resources, along with the processes involved in focusing their potential toward some particular need. For years I’ve been fascinated with the idea of making biogas, but I was intimidated by what appeared to be complex and exacting science in the recipe requirements for optimum gas production. But experience is the best teacher and, after all, this simple process of biomass decay happens all by itself in nature

Energy expert Paul Scheckel offers practical advice for taking matters into your own hands. Step-by-step instructions show you how to build a bicycle-powered generator, a biodiesel processor, a thermosiphon solar hot-water collector, a biogas generator,.

I have read a lot of books on solar energy and other kinds of energy. They never really explained things in terms that the average person could understand. This book however is great! It tells you everything you need to know, and it is written in clear understandable English. I learned a lot from this book and would highly recomend it to others. It not only explains types of energy, it also tells you what you can do to say energy in your home every day with what you;ve got. In other words, no installing big expensive converters and such. However, if you want to install a whole new system it explains that too.

I just bought this book and I love it. I'm often really intimidated by books about energy conservation because it's either strident or so technical that I end up feeling defeated and I just, well...crank up the heat.

This book was really different. It's anecdotal, practical, and comprehensive. Inside of 15 minutes I had 4 ideas for how I might save energy in my home...ideas I could actually execute myself. I even LAUGHED a couple times, which is no small thing in a book about energy. My sense is that Paul Scheckel has been thinking about energy conservation for a lot longer than most, and in ways that are really personal to HIM. In other words, he's writing for homeowners. For us.
I strongly recommend this book to folks who are looking for ways to cut back on their energy use, and save a buck.

Everything you need to know to transition your home to renewable energy, written in a readable, enjoyable style. Scheckel is the archetypal garage engineer who figures out how to make technology serve his family AND the environment because he loves the tinkering. But, he understands that not everyone is as fearless about gear (or has as tolerant a spouse). You can make your family's energy use more sustainable and this book is a great way to start down that path.
