This was recommended to me as an absolute "must have" for a beginner gardener and I agree. The format is excellent and is beautifully designed to provide as much or as little information as you need. It isn't necessary to sit down and read cover to cover (although it can be enjoyed that way). It has all the information you need to take care of a garden throughout the seasons in an approachable fashion. It addresses soil prep, planting, pruning, pest control, etc. I recently purchased a home with an extensive garden and far more plants in a different zone than I had previously. This book is a great guide to help me with a daunting task; rejuvenate a neglected garden and bring it back to health after a couple of years of drought. Time will tell whether it will turn me into a proficient gardener or whether the garden will show results. Stay tuned...
I, like most gardeners, have a great library. This book was a great addition. My garden runs the entire length around my backyard, which is large. Every flower is a perennial and I have blooms from early Spring to Autumn. I use annuals for all my pots. This book give great descriptions, photos and placements for many of the perennials I have in my yard and they show the newest varieties.
I work as a perennial salesperson in a large, family-owned garden center in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. Any time a customer asks for a book on perennials or gardening in general, I always recommend this one.

It provides a wealth of general gardening information on soil preparation, watering, diseases, pruning techniques and more. The plant encyclopedia section is the most valuable part of the book. In it, Ms. Aust discusses the most widely available and popular perennials individually and in detail. For each plant, there is a picture next to which she lists the latin name, the common name, the light, water and soil requirements, the height, width and bloom-time. After those details are presented, she discusses when to prune, cut back, dead-head, divide and fertilize that plant. She has gathered this information over a lifetime of gardening experience.

The appendix of the book contains many valuable lists of plants under headings such as "Plants to Pinch for Height Control" or "Clay Busters". I can't imagine selling perennials to others or tending to my own garden without this bible.

One complaint that customers have mentioned to me about this book (after I have recommended it)is that Ms. Aust uses the Latin nomenclature for everything. This was intimidating to me at first, too. I had to learn the Latin for my job as a perennial salesperson so I was forced to "embrace" it. I am glad that I did because it makes reading a book like this easier. My advice to anyone interested in gardening: learn the Latin! It's intellectually challenging and fun. It will open up a wide world of plants to you. Carpe diem!
Recommended to me by a master gardener, this book has proven a valuable resource that is easy to dip into for quick advice or direction or to settle back and learn much more about technique or approach. I find it most useful for resolving issues with individual plants. And I love the author's candor--"this plant is a dog and should be avoided" had me laughing as I ran to my garden to dig up a plant I bought because I liked its leaf and then found it invasive.
This book is amazing! A comprehensive, interesting, well-written manual on how to take care of many plants. Lovely pictures. A wonderful reference! The author gives practical, honest information based on her own gardening experience. There are a few chapters of overview, then each plant is discussed individually. I have recommended it to all my gardening friends, who also love it.
I skimmed through it , it seems to have good basic info but mostly on plants, I was looking for info on shrubs and trees, as I have a lot of them in my new house. You need to know plants and shrubs names in order to find info , being novice gardener I don't know many of the plants in my yard so before I can read about them in this book, I have to identify them using other resources.
Another well read book at this home. If you have a perennial gardener in your home, this is a great reference.
This is a great book to have if you garden, or want to begin. Great , practical advice about how to care for plants, best combinations in a bed or path, and how to select.
