I work with wire quite a bit in my jewelry making and have stayed clear of steel; fearing the material will ruin my tools and, quite frankly, not liking most of what I've seen. Well, "Steel Wire Jewelry" by Brenda Schweder may make me change my opinions fast! I have long admired Brenda's innovative approach to jewelry making and find this book both informative and inspirational. Working with steel requires a different set of "rules" and Brenda lays this out well, from what tools to use for the best effect as well as her section on "jewelry building blocks". Some of the basics are covered in other wire books, but she lets you know the little tidbits that are unique to working with steel wire.
The projects are divided up into catagories; wire basics, working with different gauges of wire, combining the wire with other materials, being inspired by Calder, and my favorite two; creating bezels and prongs and creating chains. The ideas in those two chapters are inspirational enough to make me buy the book! All projects have well written directions, clear diagrams and excellent photos and are supplemented with inspirational gallerywork from Brenda and other artists.
What I like the most about this book is Brenda's "out of the box" and whimsical approach to design. This book can help a jewelry maker get a bit out of the box on their own by following Brenda's advice and inspiration either by replicating one of the 30 projects included or using one of those and the techniques covered to create a new one of a kind.
Thanks, Brenda!
This is a wonderful unique book. I have many books on wire wrapping and this one simply stands out. Many other books are "seen one seen them all" but you won't find that here. The designs are hip, breathing new life to wire wrapped jewelry. The only downside was it could have put a resource guide in the book as to where to find the wire. But a quick email to the author and she promptly and kindly responded -pointing me in the right direction.

The instructions are clear. But in using this medium, you can make your wraps less uniform and the finished pieces are just as wonderful. I've also incorporated some of the themes using brass, silver and copper wire and I'm loving it. I've owned this book a few weeks and I'm still looking at it daily. This is one you'll refer to often-- if you put it down at all.
This book will catch your eye from the get go. First the title automatically promises to save you money... "STEEL Wire Jewelry" and with the price of gold, silver and all the others, steel is sure to be a money saver. T he cover is a lovely treat with a picture of wire flowers on Greek leather which is really in today. If you like Calder's jewelry then this book is sure to catch your fancy with its whimsical and festive wire work and looping designs. The projects are all very fun and interesting. And the layout of the book is done very well. All of the projects in the book could be done with any wire of your choice... silver, copper, brass, steel, etc. I have quite an extensive collection of jewelry making books and I really liked this one as it is very creative, fresh, fun, whimsical and teaches some really good, new techniques in wire working. This book is sure to keep your creative juices flowing. I know I had a hard time putting it down!
I'm having a field day with all the creativity in this book! I'm very happy with myself for buying it and very thankful to the author, Brenda Schweder, for creating it. I was a bit shy to start wire working in general but was apprehensive with the thought of using expensive silver/copper/etc metal wires. This book allowed me to expand my idea of the possibilities using a cheaper, steel wire. The author gives the reader really good information on types of steel wire, gauges, tools needed and more. And not only that, makes visually appealing jewelry that I myself would wear. Bravo!! And thanks!!
Just started reading this book from the beginning, (vs just jumping to the projects....ok, I did check out the pictures!).
Since working with steel is so "perceptively" different than other materials i've used in jewelry...(like copper, beads, PMC) , I thought I should start with the basics & at the beginning. Brenda Schweder has written a very good instructional read, with plenty of (creative humor).

So glad I bought it!
I am so pleased that I stumbled across this great book! I am new to jewelry making. I am doing a lot of experimenting with different metal wires. I love to look of annealed steel and was thrilled to find that it makes beautiful ear wires and earrings. The book is well written and photographed beautifully. It's a great addition to any craft jeweler's library.
This is a nice book. Good instructions but not quite what I expected. I used a couple of the patterns listed here but basically used it for information on steel wire. Good if you are a beginner though. Steel wire is much cheaper to work with and you will learn some good techniques.
Not abad book but I'd use these ideas in copper, not steel.
