Hamstead Colliery, near Birmingham, suffered a disastrous fire on the 4th March, 1908, whereby 24 miners were entombed. Rescue attempts by the Hamstead men were augmented by the efforts of volunteers from the neighbouring Tankersley (Barnsley) and Altofts (Normanton) Mine Rescue Brigades. One of them, a Yorkshireman named John Welsby, lost his life in the subsequent rescue attempts, and in spite of their valorous efforts all 24 trapped minors died.
