Here, we reflect on the rich history of these commonplace wedding-day traditions, while acknowledging that our ancestors had some pretty strange beliefs. Later, the tradition evolved into the bride pushing pieces of her wedding cake through her ring to the guests. Those in attendance would take that piece of cake home to place under their pillows for, again, good luck. It's a great thing, today, that we can just enjoy a slice (or two) at the wedding without picking up crumbs off the floor. What others are saying

In India, a common wedding tradition is the use of mehndi, often known as henna. Before the wedding ceremony, a day is set in which mehndi is applied to the hands and feet of the bride and sometimes the groom. Another interesting German wedding tradition has the bride and groom create a wedding newspaper with pictures, stories, and even articles about the couple. This newspaper is sold at the wedding reception and the profit is used to help pay for the honeymoon. In traditional Czech weddings, the bride and groom are covered in a large cloth during the reception.

This is a well produced book with excellent, dated illustrations. It is particularly valuable for dating wedding dresses, although the rather odd 'recreations' of of Medieval Costumes are a distraction. It is hlepful to see designer sketches as well as photographs. Some wedding customs and their origins are included.

It would make a nice 'light-hearted' gift for an intending bride.

A beautiful, colorful 164 page library volume that pays tribute to every detail of this important day. Full of wonderful photos, drawings, old ads, and history. Covers rituals, superstitions, dowries, matchmaking, romance, pomp and circumstance, historical and socially prominent unions, the silver service, romance in the military, couture and fashion brides at century's end. Wonderful to browse through, and to learn from. Makes a great gift for the bride too.
