Two years ago, I have been diagnosed with a couple of auto-immune disorders. My doctor put me on harsh medications that helped very little or not at all. For two years, my joints have been permanently swollen. At times, my entire body felt swollen. I took weight while barely eating. I discovered this book back in February, I read it once and I criticized some of its repetitions and style. During the summer break, I re-read it and starting applying the rule of 1/3 protein and 2/3 good carbohydrates + 4 g of fish oil / day. I didn't like the recipes presented in the book, but I adapted my own recipes and followed the principles. I lost 15 lbs in two weeks, my joints look normal again and I didn't put back one pound. I wish I could be more consistent in what I do (hectic lifestyle!), but even so it is considerably better now than before I started. I don't believe in the author's fat-free stuff mantra, I buy only whole milk products, but I don't eat fatty meats at all. I eliminated the sugar, but still add some honey in my coffee and it doesn't make any difference in how my joints feel. I realized that in order to eat all the greens and veggies Sears recommends, I absolutely have to buy only fresh, best-quality produce. I use greens in smoothies instead of salads, so no need for dressings. My family doesn't understand how I can live without eating rice, potatoes, and especially bread and pasta (staple foods for Europeans like me) -- the ingredients on Sears's black list. Believe it or not, I don't miss them at all, because the protein included in this diet makes me feel full and cravings-free. Overall, it is the very first time in my life when I try a diet that produces results. The weight-loss came as a bonus since I was interested primarily in reducing the chronic pain and the swelling -- especially in my hands (so important in my work!). Now, I can make a fist.
This book is laid out wonderfully. If you want to look up a specific condition and what to do about it (eg how inflamation affects the heart or diabetes or fibromyalgia), there are specific sections and you can go directly to the area of most interest to you. While some people aren't interested in the research behind the recommendations, I am, and this book delivers! The studies are well presented and it's content rich which meant I had to re-read one of the chapters to totally absorb the terminology. Can it get better than that? This book really helped me understand what's happening with our health and the research was so convincing that I now take ultra-refined fish oil on a daily basis. And guess fibromyalgia pain has all but disappeared! PS. He is absolutely correct that the cheap fish oil supplements don't work; I tried.
I have Rheumatoid Arthritis. It gave me good information on what happens when my body attacks itself. Also helped me point out why some foods considered healthy would cause an inflammatory reaction with my condition. A nurse lent me the book and I ended up buying it so I could refer to it when trying to inform other RA people.
Remember the late 1990s when "Balance Bars" first came out? That was Dr. Barry Sears and his Zone Diet which completely reframed the world regarding carbohydrates.

Nobody listened to Dr. Atkins before Sears came out with his book. Nobody had heard about Arachidontic Acid (AA) before that either. Unless you know about AA, then you know zilch about inflammation or dietary causes of chronic disease. Bet your doctor knows NOTHING about this. Keep reading.

Fast forward to 2007. Now every 7-11 has a whole shelf of balance bars of all types including Dr. Sears new brand Zone Bars. (He's no longer part of Balance bars.)

After the success of the Zone Diet, Dr. Sears kept busy working on new fronts and he landed a very big fish (or should I say fish oil) in the area of health.

Medical compasses around the world were starting to point towards silent inflammation as the major culprit behind chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, arthritis, obesity, altzheimers, ADHD, and more.

Half of what medicine does is deal with inflammation if you think about it. Put ice on it. Take two aspirin. Gobble ibuprophin. Steroids you say? Doctors deal with inflammation to make us feel better.

So what?

Well, there's something called silent inflammation too. That type of inflammation of your arteries, brain, internal organs, joints etc. is a time bomb ready to go off and shorten your life.

Sears understands this and others follow. Researchers chased him and verified his lower carbohydrate balanced diet is more healthy for you than the mighty FDA food pyramid.

They're chasing him again proving that high dose (Eskimo dose) fish oil knocks out silent inflammation and crosses tbe blood brain barrier better than other anti-inflammatories. And... it's just food oil. Safe? Not unless you get pharmaceutical grade. Sears sells it... surprise.

You can get it from other sources if you are smart. Why shouldn't Sears profit though? All the copycats profit off of him.

Anyway, this book will start you on the path to understanding that all those aspirin you've taken over your life and ice packs put on sore ankles had a deeper message for you. GET RID OF INFLAMMATION.

Read this book, get smart and do what Dr. Sears tells you to do. Get all of his books. Omega RX, Zone Diet, Toxic Fat. These will give you a much improved quality of life well into the sunset years.
This book was recommended to me by my cardiologist. I haven't finished reading it yet, but it is very informative regarding diets of anyone with inflammation problems.
The Zone works for me. Nice to have update about its anti-inflammatory benefits, but not worth the price of the book, which mainly feels like an ad for Dr. Sear's vitamin D3. Disappointed.
Excellent book. Useful & realistic information that is understandable & makes complete sense. Highly recommend this read for anyone with inflammation issues.
Much clearer and easier to comprehend than his previous books. Good explanations of the body's processes that his diet controls.
