I was intending to get a good cookbook with nostalgic descriptions of the festival in Italian/American life--possibly to give as a gift. But it has cartoons that are more cynical than pleasantly nostalgic. Some people will like it because of that, but it didn't suit me. I wouldn't use it as a gift because it's kind of a downer.

this book is horribly insulting. when a book is described as a comic and fun family, it should be just that. when a comic book talks about "getting Laid" this is off limits and should have a disclaimer. we are a catholic Italian family who love to laugh and eat but we never talk like this in front of the little children.. I am surprised at Amazon for not mentioning the language, to warn us. I'm glad I took the time to go through it before sending it to my brother and he read it to his family, children Christmas eve. Not all catholic Italians talk trash !
I love Mercedes
duplicate book returned both because i didnt' like the whole book in comic strip form.
This book has it all - a great story, great visuals, and mouth-watering recipes. Anyone who loves the films of my friend Les Blank, a recent winner of an international food film award for "Yum, Yum, Yum", would also love this graphic novel. I also greatly enjoyed it because it presents a different view of Appalachia where it takes place. As the programmer for The Clarksburg Italian Heritage Film Festival for twenty years, I know that there are great Italian-Americans in Appalachia, not just NYC and other eastern cities.

Presently a person from the same town, Fairmont, WV, is the popular governor of West Virginia, Governor Manchin, who also happens to be the first Catholic governor of a mostly Protestant state. JFK's primary victory in 1964 in WV proved he could win over Protestants. Hopefully Gov. Manchin will place copies of this book in all of WV's libraries - like Gov. Underwood did with copies of Homer Hickham's book and film of "October Sky."

I also hope that someone will make a good film version of this book - maybe author Robert Tinnell himself, who has made many films in his past life. John Sayles' great film "Matewan" had some Italians in it, challenging the usual Anglo stereotype of Appalachia. A popular film would help teach the world that Appalachia is a multi-cultural region.
