Idiot's Guides: Drawing Manga is for anyone who has no previous drawing experience, or who is new to drawing in the Manga style. The overall approach is focused on simplifying the drawing process by breaking down lessons into more steps and "mini lessons" that are easier to learn. This easy-to-follow full-color guide starts with the most basic features, moving into basic characters and emotions, and then on to basic character poses and interactions that are common to the most popular Manga styles. It's a good reference for building up my anime someday.

I did not find this volume helpful. This book will not help with ink and color, and the cover is misleading. When I think of drawing, I think of the whole process, not just the pencil lines and sketching. The book is not a 'complete' reference -- nothing about inking or coloring except the final sketch. It is assumed you already can do ink, coloring, tones, etc...

I'm not an accomplished artist. Manga drawing is on the simpler side, so I tried this book. The blurb on the back states "all the techniques". Lies! Basic example drawings have three pictures -- a partial outline using simple geometric shapes that is easy to duplicate, followed by a complex drawing that is difficult to copy and always requires erasing parts of the outline sketch, and finally a full colored example that is baffling. While I had success with outlines, as soon as I went over the sketch in pen, I was never able to get my final 'colored' work to match anything like what the book shows.

Complex example drawings take up two pages, but the transition from sketch three to sketch four always has a massive amount of added detail, without instruction. Whenever the book instructs 'start to add more detail' and does so without step-by-step instruction, I was lost. These techniques were not explained.

A break down of preliminary sketching on various body parts like feet, hands, legs, etc... in various positions is good in the early first hundred pages. In the mid-book, some of these have enough steps to be helpful. This is only a book for helping you sketch... the finished product is never broken down, either in 'adding detail' or in 'coloring'. The extensive galleries that take up over half the book were useless padding, because they are fully colored drawings without intermediate steps to help a starting artist re-create them.

If you *already* know how to draw the galleries might make a good reference for your potential side-characters, living up to the cover. If you don't know how to draw, this book will frustrate you. It is not helpful for the beginner beyond a few basic lessons on sketching.
