The Sinners from Mitar
I picked up the whole five book series because I was already familiar with some of the authors other work. This story was cute and fun, not too heavy but meaningful. Don't expect a grand epic, just let yourself be entertained! This story could easily adapt to the television screen, though I don't think there is a series.

I love Takashima's art and have read some of her yaoi. Now. This is NOT a yaoi. I knew that and wish it wasn't true because there is SO MUCH POTENTIAL haha. Anyways, I have only read this first volume and I bust out laughing quite a few times. Sometimes the pages are littered with a bit of confusing action but you will figure it out eventually. I plan on buying more later.

Unlike the other books Takashima has out in English, this is not yaoi, despite the pretty boys all over the cover. Mad Love Chase is a completely insane screwball shoujo comedy series, in which a demon prince, Kujyo (Our Hero), escapes from Hell with his pet cat-demon Rebun because he doesn't want to marry the demon princess Dad's picked out for him, and finds a new life as an Ordinary High-School Student(TM). Rebun (the cat-girl) takes the form of the hot school nurse, who has to protect Kujyo from the minions of Hell sent to retrieve him (the hotties on the back cover), who are posing as a fellow-student, a janitor at the school, and a dog (or something).

Fortunately for Kujyo and Rebun, the minions are utterly incompetent (but hot). They sorta suspect Kujyo of being the prince, and much of the "plot" of this volume consists of various insane schemes to get Kujyo to take his shirt off, so they can look for an incriminating tattoo that prince-boy has on his back. One minion (the big guy Taiki) makes friends with Kujyo (without figuring out that he's the prince), and defends him from the efforts of the others, which makes no actual sense but it's funnier that way. Then the jilted princess shows up with *her* minions, and they also try to wrestle Kujyo's shirt off and promptly get beaten up by Taiki. And there's a girl who has a crush on Taiki and harasses Kujyo because she thinks they're a gay couple and she's jealous. And so forth.

It's ridiculous. And funny. And the art is gorgeous; Takashima does great rubbery faces and exaggerated body language, and it suits the slapstick storytelling very well. And it has lots of pretty boys in it. And it's hilarious, did I mention that? On the down side, Volume 1 is pretty short, the paper quality is not great (like many recent Tokyopop releases), and there are no translation notes despite a few points (like pop-culture references) that could have used explaining. So: no boy-on-boy action, lots of slapstick, pretty boy overload, and funny. If that sounds good to you, buy it.

Kaito, prince of the demon realm, runs away on the day he is to be married. His father immediately sends three demons after him, to catch him and bring him back. The only way that they will know it is him is by the mark on his back. The problem? Er...problems? Of the three demons sent to find Kaito, one is a womanizing vampire, one is an anti-social werewolf and the third is a huge...person, who, while usually fairly easy to scare, when his temper snaps he is a different person.
Meanwhile, not knowing that they are looking for him, Kaito enters high school under the name of Kujou Yamato. When they entered the human world, his pet cat, Rebun, turned into a human, and now she is the school nurse. And at school...the school janitor is always trying to flirt with Rebun, and Yamato's best friend is an abnormally huge kid...

This series is hilarious. The reason it seems like a typical storyline at first is the whole 'prince running away to escape an arranged marriage' sort of thing. After that, it is it's own unique story. Personally, I like the hints of shonen-ai, and the frequent misunderstandings. I can't wait for more of this to come out...who knows what trouble Yamato will get into?

I love this series, it's funny and surprising and has great characters. I don't know why it isn't more mainstream.
