Written by Roy Thomas, Marvel Illustrated: Dracula is a limited series adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 horror novel. The collection features art by Dick Giordano. Marvel previously adapted the story in Marvel Classics Comics (September 1976). I have a soft spot for Classic Illustrated comic books.

Bram Stoker's classic story of horror has been very sucessfully adapted to the graphic novel format in this Marvel Classics production, courtesy of Roy Thomas and Dick Giordano. This excellent production captures all the essentials of the original novel in a fast-paced script and superbly scary artwork.

As the story opens, the unfortunate young Englishman Jonathan Harker takes leave of his finance Mina Murray to journey deep into Transylvania for a business meeting at Castle Dracula. Harker slowly discovers the castle harbors an ancient horror he can only barely comprehend, which uses him to gain access to England. In England, Mina waits for Harker's return and deals with the suddenly strange behavior of lovely best friend Lucy Westenra. Lucy's behavior and a rash of mysterious events attracts the attention of Mina's and Lucy's friends, who summon an expert, a Professor Van Helsing. It is Van Helsing who reveals to the young men, and to Mina, the nature of the beast they face. The young men, joined by Harker, Mina, and the Professor, conduct a desperate race across Europe to find the beast before he can kill yet more innocent victims. Not all of them will survive the race or the confrontation...

"Dracula" is very highly reocmmended to fans of Marvel Classics as a first rate adaptation of the original horror novel.

I loved Bram Stoker's novel, also Bela Lugosi's movie, ever the Hammer films. Vampires are always popular, with Twilight craze and all, but it's always great to return to the story by Bram Stoker because Dracula began there. And to see it dramatized in comic book form is wonderful, because I'm a comics fan. I read the graphic novel Vlad The Impaler, but that book isn't really about Dracula I know, but this Marvel edition is faithful to Bram Stoker's novel, since it's intended to be adaptation of the novel. Even all the movies didn't do as faithful adaptation. I love comic books, and this Marvel piece is a good read, and a break from super-heroes. Just like reading Bram Stoker's novel never gets old, or watching the black and white movie, seeing Dracula in another medium is great and could be enjoyed through read after read. I'm satisfied with this purchase.

This is a superb, literate adaptation that beautifully recreats Bram Stoker's original vision. Compare this to Francis Ford Coppola's movie and you'll see how that soft-porn version with it's romance-novel sub-plot IS NOT "Bram Stoker's Dracula". A direct adaptation of this comic using it's imagery as the storyboards would produce a superb Dracula movie. One with Sir Ian McKellen as Van Helsing, Brad Dourif as Reinfield, Orlando Bloom as Johnathon Harker and Sean Patrick Flanery as American/Texan Quincy Morris, whom dies after putting his Bowie knife through Dracula's heart. It would be his second tousle with Drac (he tangled with Vlad Tepes' reincarnation when he played Young Indiana Jones. (I haven't worked out the rest of my dream-cast yet.)

Anyway I digress. This comic/graphic novel, over 20-years in the making is a treasure. Ironically I original found it at the pubic library in the TEEN section despite the Parental Advisory on the back-cover. The ignorant librarians figure all graphic novels are comic books and that comic books are for kids. The same mentality that says Fantasy like Lord of the Rings is for kids as are all video-games.

While I love this version there is a Puffin GraphicsBram Stocker's Dracula: The Graphic Novel adaptation in B&W that is solid and more suited to a younger audience.

I also have pre-ordered and anxiously await the "Dracula The Graphic Novel: Original Text" by Jason Cobley Dracula The Graphic Novel: Original Text

BTW the screenplay that follows the Dracula novel the closest is for the BBC "Count Dracula"Count Dracula (BBC Mini-Series) while Jesse Francos "Count Dracula" captures Dracula's look and transformation the best.Jess Franco's Count Dracula (Special Edition). However while Bela Legosi Dracula (75th Anniversary Edition) (Universal Legacy Series) is considered the definitive Dracula by most, my favorite Dracula was Jack Palance in Dark Shadows' creator Dan Curtis' TV production of "Dracula". Dan Curtis' DraculaThey take the wonderful menace Christopher Lee brought to Dracula in the Hammer films Draculas: 4 Film Favorites (Horror of Dracula / Dracula Has Risen from the Grave / Taste the Blood of Dracula / Dracula A.D. 1972) and magnified it 10-fold. Palance is like Dracula with Darth Vader's strength and menace.

P.S. The reason for my knowledge on the subject is I'm researching two projects. A screenplay adaptation that faithfully follows Stoker and a short film that modernizes Dracula's mythos on a small-scale as a devoted husband and father turned Vampire tries to recreate his lost family. Coming soon on my coming soon website TheRetroRob!

I bought this graphic novel for my wife, and she loves it. The book has a glossy dust-jacket, is hard-backed, and the pages are glossy as well. The art style is very nice, and the story follows along with Brom Stoker's Dracula.

Is a pity that no editor Spanish not it has edited in Spanish-Castilian in our country Spain. The perfect colored and the intractable issue. A highly anticipated reissue.
