As well, he is the generally recognized co-creator of the characters Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats (the title character of which was named for his wife), and Cheryl Blossom.

Dan DeCarlo was the dean of Archie artists. Aside from Bob Montana, no single artist is more associated with the teenagers of Riverdale High. Beginning his career at Archie in the mid 1950s, DeCarlo soon became the main artist on Betty and Veronica, and drew every character at one time or another in his nearly 50-year career with Archie. Dan DeCarlo was also the first artist ever to draw Josie and Sabrina, establishing the visual looks of these two long-running and fondly remembered characters.

"Archie: Best Of Dan DeCarlo, Volume 4"
Art & Stories by Dan DeCarlo
(IDW Books, 2013)

This is another great addition to IDW's series of reprint books profiling various top artists from the Archie Comics franchise. For many fans, Dan DeCarlo is the best of the best, and this fourth volume of his work shifts gears a little to include not just several Archie stories, but also about a half dozen classic adventures featuring Josie (a teen queen who would later form the band Josie & The Pussycats, here still an ordinary kid) as well as a couple of stories with Sabrina The Teenage Witch. (Indeed, we are treated to Sabrina's first appearance - great stuff!) This is another outstanding collection is this top-notch series. I wish they had more of the Harry Lucey and Samm Schwartz books lined up as well... Anyway, fans of classic 1950s/'60s/'70s Archie comics really HAVE TO pick this up... You won't find a better value for your hard-earned money, and IDW definitely deserves all the support we can give them. (DJ Joe Sixpack, ReadThatAgain childrens book reviews)

I'd gladly give 5 stars to all the previous editions of this series because of the size, paper quality, and that the art has been rescanned and recolored providing for a great read. But I'm troubled with this 4th volume because the story "Backs A Loser" is not Dan DeCarlo's art. This art comes from the talented Bob Bolling, who deserves his own best of series, especially showcasing his Little Archie work. It doesn't ruin the book, but it's a pretty hefty error in my opinion for a series that is a tribute to the artistic talent of Dan Decarlo. It's like putting out a "Best of the Beatles" and having a Monkees' song on it, but listed as by the Beatles. If this series gets reprinted, the story "Backs A Loser" should be replaced with a real Dan DeCarlo story and then I'd gladly give it 5 stars.

If you like or have read any of the books in this series, you already know to expect great paper quality, color, smell, etc....but as a reviewer already pointed out, and I also noticed the second I came across it, there is a story in this book NOT by Dan DeCarlo, but rather by Bob Bolling. And if the people putting these books out can't even be trusted to know who's art they're anthologizing, then what ELSE are they screwing up? I think I noticed a date screw-up in an early edition too but would have to go home and check to make sure.....but still, that would be a detail-quibble. Putting a different (albeit great in his own right) artist in a DeCarlo anthology is inexcusable.

These are the stories I grew up with as a kid. The art is superb and the printing is beautiful.

I've purchased every one of these volumes since IDW began publishing them in 2010 and this is one of the best so far. It contains stories from Pep, Laugh and Betty and Veronica comics circa 1960-68 and the format is the same: nice, glossy pages with bright comic art. I should mention that the text in a couple of stories has a slight jagged look to it (someone complained about this on the review page for The Best of Harry Lucey Volume 2 where the same thing occured).

What elevates this volume is the fact we get four JOSIE stories from the 1960s pre-Pussycats era as well as two SABRINA stories from her '60s appearances in Archie's Madhouse. I keep hoping they will release separate volumes for these two iconic characters, but until then, this will have to suffice.

If you bought and enjoyed the previous "Best-Of's", you will like this one too.

FIVE STARS.

OMG, Betty thinks she park Archie's car then come back and notice the fence was crush.

Another nice volume of Dan DeCarlo work. But one story contributed to him didn't look like his work. And I felt it didn't belong with the others.
Highly recommended!!!
