Joel J. Miller's Lifted by Angels aims to correct that. A great guide to both of these elements is this book by Joel Miller. The only thing I missed is his naming of all 7 Archangels (which he did on the Hugh Hewitt show: Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Remiel and Saraqael.

My nephew was kidnapped by a non-relative in January of 2013 and has not yet been returned to his family who loves him, so it is an incredible comfort to think about angels watching over him and keeping him safe, and read/study about angels. This book seems either Catholic or Orthodox Christian -- for instance, in what I consider "mainstream Christianity," people say, "the Adversary" or "the Accuser of the Brethren" (among many others), but here, he is consistently called "the devil." On some levels, the information seems irrelevant to our lives today, but I'm glad I read it.

The author goes to great lengths to organize and research his subject. It is a great read and difficult to put down. Very uplifting, deeply moving. I was trying to determine Miller's religious denomination, but it is not readily apparent. I would guess he comes from a small "c" catholic background. However he is profoundly respectful of readers coming from a more Evangelical experience and explains why a devotion or appreciation of angels is an important enhancement to a person's Christian faith and not a distraction to it. My only criticism is that his clarity and logic could equally be applied towards a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and the very Saints he quotes but only identifies by names, e.g., Augustine, Clement, John, etc. It struck me as an almost comical aversion to the very thought of being labeled "too Catholic". Regardless, buy this book and be prepared to grow in faith.

Angels have become something of a cliche in modern life, whether in cartoons with harps and halos, on TV shows with banal stories of angels in disguise, or on the knick-knack shelves of Christian bookstores. Angels have essentially been safely compartmentalized away from serious spiritual--or unspiritual--life. They're a nice notion but largely irrelevant. Joel J. Miller's Lifted by Angels aims to correct that.

Lifted by Angels is the best book on angels I've read since The Screwtape Letters. It helps immensely that Miller treats the subject seriously. Popular perceptions of angels tend to be of shapely, dewy-eyed comforters, a treatment that Lewis called "insipid." Miller paints a much better picture by drawing on Scripture--including apocryphal works that Miller points out were accepted as Scripture by the early Church--and the work of the Church Fathers up to the time of Bede. The result is a balanced look at angels. They are powerful but not omnipotent, intelligent but not omniscient, and beautiful but only as a reflection of God's own glory. And, most importantly for modern believers, they are present and involved in the world.

Lifted by Angels is structured in short, thematic chapters. The first few are a rough history of angels--their creation by God, their purpose, the sad fact of Satan's involvement in the Fall, and the involvement of angels in events through Scripture. The second half of the book details the role of angels in our own lives, especially as guardians and guides provided for us by God.

Perhaps the best sections--or at least the most meaningful to me--were those describing the role of angels in our lives. I come from a very religious family and we have a handful of stories in which what we suspect were angels figure prominently--including an incident from my own life. I hadn't realized until after reading this book how little I now think about angels. But Miller, drawing on Scripture and the writings of numerous Church Fathers, gave me a moving reminder that no man is an island, spiritually speaking, and that we do not live in a world devoid of the supernatural. I was alarmed at how deeply even religious people--namely, myself, who has reason to think often of angels--have been affected by a kind of scientific materialism, essentially assuming God and his involvement while acknowledging nothing else but what we see. Lifted by Angels is a powerful corrective to that.

Recommended.

This book goes into great depth about angels and guardians. The historical references provide substantiation for the existence of these celestial beings. However, I guess I was looking for a less detailed book and was disappointed to be mired in the history and theology of the subject. Now I would like to read about how Angels interact in our lives today. I get the history part, now share modern day examples of Angel interaction.

We do not do our faith life a favor by ignoring the Angels; both their role in salvation history and their role in our present day worship and life. A great guide to both of these elements is this book by Joel Miller. The only thing I missed is his naming of all 7 Archangels (which he did on the Hugh Hewitt show: Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Raguel, Remiel and Saraqael.). I have been a Christian all my life and I feel the love and protection of my angels all the time, everyday! I so enjoyed the writing in this book as it takes you through the teaching of God and how HE created the Angels for HUMANS! God loves us so much he made the angels to come into everyday events to be with us for protection and guidance!!! Buy this and learn how wonderful the angels in your life are! You can get to know them and appreciate all they do for you!

I found the book informative and interesting. But, I also felt some of the reference materials were too difficult to find and for a book of this nature I prefer to validate references myself. So, being unable to do that I dropped a star.
Excellent overview of angels, tracing their mention through the Old Testament and the New, and including many quotes from the Church fathers. Encouraging and inspiring.
