Last year Baptist History & Heritage initiated an annual Festschrift .

This year it is my privilege to introduce a Festschrift in honor of Harry Leon McBeth. This is the second Festschrift for Dr. McBeth of which I have been a part. So when Bruce Gourley asked me to help put together this issue of Baptist History & Heritage, I jumped at the chance.

I was very pleased with this volume. It covers numerous key events which show the transformation of Baptists as a whole and the Southern Baptist Convention in particular. The diversity of contributors was also important in my purchase and appreciation of this book.

Published at the 400th anniversary of the Baptist Church, this wonderful reference workdescribes the spectacular rise of the Baptists from persecuted minority to world's largest Protestant denomination. The book contains an outline of the key events which have made Baptists what they are today. Each chapter represents a major event in this development. Chapter topics include "The Context of Baptist Beginnings: 1517-1609," and "Baptist Baptism and the Turn toward Believer's Baptism by Immersion: 1642." Each chapter is written by a different scholar in the field.
