Mike Black returns to his past to tell the real story; the one you only thought you knew

Mike Black returns to his past to tell the real story; the one you only thought you knew. Years before he was the boss of his family, and long before he met his loving wife, Cassandra AKA Shy, Mike Black was an enforcer for drug kingpin André Harmon, who ran most of the illegal activity in the area. Those days, he was known as Vicious Black, and he terrified anyone who dared challenge him or André's rule. As far as André was concerned, gambling, number running and prostitution were just side hustles compared to the real moneymaker: his drug operation. That's where young Mike.

Is It a Crime? is the book that started it all for the Mike Black series and for my introduction to it as well. Though I am late to the series, be assured that this won't be the last in the series that I read because I am totally hooked. The characters and plot development were outstanding, the action was non-stop and stirring, the setting descriptions were extraordinarily vivid, and there is a beautiful romance that touched my heart and kept me riveted and cheering..

Yes, in spite of not being classified as such, this cross-genre novel is also a romance. Roy Glenn has masterfully incorporated the elements of the romance genre so that the storyline for Mike Black (Vicious/Vicious Black) and Cassandra Sims (Shy) truly fits that classification. In spite of numerous supporting characters and some important sub-plots, everything is intricately and beautifully interwoven to create an impressive page-turner. Kudos to Roy Glenn for creating what I am certain is a fantastic series to which I will become a loyal fan. So happy to have met and attended several sessions with you at Romance Slam Jam.

I read the book a few years ago and was compelled to read the entire series. So, naturally, I needed to start with the first book and move forward. First and foremost, I like Roy Glenn's voice. The characters are drenched in realness. Even though Mike exclaimed on too many occasions that he was out of the game! The point was less clear once he met Cassandra 'Shy' Sims---- wow! oh how he was taken aback by her beauty and charm, it was on. The Black doth protest to much.. And yes, that was my feeling about all his clamoring. For Shy to be so intellectually advanced, I had problems with the right in front of her things she missed. I applauded her heart and love for her family, but she was naïve to a greater degree for a person in her position. This will shape up to be the start of a nice series. Moreover, Shy and Black will make an excellent team. Loved this story for the second time around. A must read!

Why you may ask? Well it's simple. I am a fan of romance novels. I prefer the happy ending yes, but more importantly I love, a love story. Delving into this book by Mr. Glenn, I had great trepidation for what I'd come to discover. It wasn't his writing skills that had me concerned; I've already discovered his unquestionable talent. It was the genre that this book is classified as- fiction/mystery/urban. While all of those could and do apply to this piece of work, it should clearly be labeled as romance also. Okay, maybe urban romance. Point is, this is truly a love story. And because I knew going in that the Mike Black series of books is ongoing due to popular demand and due to Roy's own love of his character's stories, I knew there wouldn't be a complete ending per say. At least not a traditional one, but the ending was satisfying to this particular story.

Getting into the story. You have a host of characters that keep you entertained throughout the entire drama. Sometimes I get thrown off of a plot when there are too many sub stories in a book, but not here. The stories all served to move the story of Mike Black and Shy (Cassandra Sims). Their story could have easily been you following them around as they traveled to exotic locales spending the hard earned money from their lucrative businesses and shopping for cute black and yellow outfits, or lazing around modest homes or eating deliciously prepared meals. Yes, it could have been the story but that would have been too easy for the Master of Urban Suspense. So instead of easy, you got suspicion, intrigue, gun fights, set-ups and a moment where one of the character's you love fights for her life. Roy kept me engaged from the first page on with his character's dialogues, their strong and clearly defined personalities, and great story movement. I look forward to reading more of this man's work.

Where it all started. The very beginning/the introduction to Mike Black and his family. This isn't just a book with a story. This is a family that you will be introduced to in this book. Be prepared to be hooked and completely addicted to everything involving Mike Black and everyone that's included in this family.

I think I just fell in love with Mike Black. Roy Glenn's development of this character and the way he crafts the story you feel like you're right there watching Mike and company. This was a refreshing read. It had all the elements of urban fiction, gun play, drug dealers, villains,-but it also had a nice touch of romance thrown in. I love urban fiction and I love mystery and I love romance and this was a very good and logical blend of all 3 genres. I enjoyed all the characters in this story and hope to see more of them (esp Freeze) in the next books.

Wow, Roy did it again. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline. I can truly say Roy never disappoints. The characters are real people to me and their interaction with one another is like the interaction you have within your own family. There is more than one story going on here; besides trying to locate who is trying to kill Shy. The action is suspenseful and never expected.
