This is the first book of a series and I was mightily impressed. The history that is explained in the begining was excellent. The characters take on lives that are believable and in great depth. I am now reading the second book and have enjoyed each chapter! Not only am I learning more about the history of slavery in the United States, the politics, but seeing the faith that Richmond and Carolyn display, not just "head knowledge, but real Jesus "heart knowledge. They are putting their faith out for all to see. Their "arbor" sounds so peaceful. We should all have a quiet place to meet God in good times and bad. Seeing their complete trust in the Lord for ALL things is very encouraging. I would recommend this book in a "heartbeat".

The summary sounded really good and I liked a lot of Phillips' other books (which are also Christian), but I couldn't make it through this one. It starts out in a weird narrative, then changes to a normal story later. The characters are so deeply ensconced in religion that they don't seem like people at all. They're also very transparent and lack depth.
The main male character never says an opinion or makes a decision without saying "I'll have to pray about it" beforehand.
I really wanted to read about the freeing of the slaves, but it was just so grating to read about the main character keep reiterating his moral indecisiveness.

I had been reading a lot of Science Fiction, world catastrophe and alternatve history books. I came across this book; a great historical fiction novel and had difficulty putting it down. Well written in an easy to read style. Very human, action packed, nail biting and demonstrating the result of Faith. On to the next in the series... With a great deal of anticipation!

This isn't the first book I have read by this author and it won't be the last. I use what are called "living books" to teach my children history. As a homeschooling mom, this is a great find. My 8th and 9th grade students will be using this book in the fall for their history studies. I can't wait to "preview" the other books in this series. It makes my job as a teacher so much easier when I find such wonderful books.

I wish he would write some series covering all of American history! Intrigue, human character, heartache, soul searching, learning who God is, tragedy and triumph...plus history. It truly does not get better than this!!
Rude
I loved reading about the history of our nation, but sad so many were so stupid to mistreat others according to their nationality or skin color. If they were gonna be that cruel they should of let them go back to their country where they were treated right. So glad this book incorporated the good Lord and His supreme love and mercy and so many characters served the Lord. I recommend this book and this author thank you for this book

I think I enjoyed this more the second time around. I also absorbed so much more of the history. Michael Phillips is a brilliant writer when it comes to blending history within his novels. Nothing is lost in the telling from both the spiritual, historic and natural aspects of the times in which of the times i which the story was set. Not all that familiar with detailed history of America I found the historic aspects covered very enlightening.

I choose to review this book low because it is very confusing and hard to read! The author begs for patience as the reader reads through the first few chapters. These chapters were history that leads up to the actual book beginning. I patiently read through all the history and started on the actual chapters for the story of this book and it too was hard to get into the story line. It was a total waste of time!
Terror evoking at a couple of places; lots of dramatic moments; often thought provoking and a few interesting characters, this story kept my attention throughout. Can't wait to see what he does with the budding political anti-hero. As a subject the underground railroad aught to cover a lot of territory. I'm on the edge of my seat with anticipation for what he'll bring next.
