I finished The Spiritual Exercises on the feast of St. Ignatius on the night before completing the Camino de Santiago in Spain. I read a small section each night over the course of one month on the pilgrimage, and would contemplate what I had read the following day.

Approbation of the latin texts. St. Ignatius of Loyola was a man without any great pretensions to education at the time he wrote this book. The Exercises were offered for ecclesiastical censure at Rome.

Derived mostly from St. Ignatius' conversion experiences in 1521-3, Spiritual Exercises has provided guidance and encouragement to its readers for several hundred years. The aim of Spiritual Exercises is to assist people in finding God's will for their life, and to give them the motivation and courage to follow that will. A key theme throughout the Spiritual Exercises is discernment-the need to discern between good desires and evil desires in one's life. It is by following the four weeks, and by utilizing such discernment, that a person can better realize God's will for his or her own life.

This book has been an amazing exercise of and for my faith!! The timing was nothing short of perfectly providential, and has enlightened me to the deeper truths of living a life lived for God alone, and how in doing so, aligns everything up within us to live just as He has designed us to, in order to bring glory to Him in EVERYTHING we think, say and do.... Not to mention the grace to get right back up when we slip, trip or fall!! I highly recommend this book to any one interested in taking your faith to the next level, which just so happens to work by taking us deeper into our faith while at the same time ascending our hearts and souls to heights unimaginable!!! Awesome....

Good translation. Easy to read although there are passages and definitions which are dated. All the editions in Spanish I was able to preview use the old 16th century Spanish, which apparently was his second language. I always go for the original if its in Spanish, French, or English. First time I chose to buy a traslation.
I was told by my pastor not to attempt a retreat by myself but in a retreat center or meeting once a week with a spiritual director for about 30 weeks. I guess people who are approaching this work intellectually, like for an MA in theology, can profit from this book in class or independent study.
