Heaven: A World Of Love

Heaven: A World Of Love. by. Jonathan Edwards. This small book (an adaptation of Edward’s final sermon in a 16-part series on 1 Corinthians 13) examines heaven and the love of God that defines it. In solid fashion, Edwards discusses the purity of heavenly love, describing how we will relate to God and to one another in the absence of hate and evil. Jonathan Edwards was the most eminent American an of his time, and a key figure in what has come to be called the First Great Awakening of the 1730s and 1740s.

Anything by Jonathan Edwards cultivates one's thinking and inspires with its unique and surprising insights into whatever topic he is treating. The present booklet is one of his sermons that was originally collected into the larger work, Charity and its Fruits. The book is truly pocket-size, fitting easily into a back pocket, jacket pocket, or purse pocket. The portability must have been the marketing niche for the book, since it is easy to find as part of the Charity and its Fruits book, or in Edwards' collected works, or for free to read online. I did enjoy having the booklet with me to carry around and read, but if you don't really need or want to have something pocket-sized, you might want to save your money and use it to buy Charity and its Fruits.

What is heaven? Is God present there, and if he is,is it not true that God is present everywhere? The Scriptures explicitly reveal that God is omnipresent. There is no place where God is not present, however the manifestation of God's presence is not the same everywhere. His presence-"...is said in some respects,to be more especially in some places than in others." Heaven is a place where God's presence and glory are manifest with those whom he dwells with in perfect love and harmony(no sin,no evil,no sadness,no tears...).'There shall in no wise enter into it anything that defiles, neither whatsoever works abomination'(Revelation 21:27). God's law is perfectly reflected,at all times,by the inhabitants of heaven.Edwards gives this helpful definition of heaven-"Heaven is a part of creation that God has built for this end,to be the place of His glorious presence, and it is his abode forever;and here will he dwell, and gloriously manifest Himself to all eternity."

The consideration of heaven should serve as a warning to those who are not reconciled to God,for those who remain impenitent, their final landing place will not be in heaven, but in hell. The godly Pastor Theologian Biblically asserts that there are three worlds-1.This world-A world in which there is good and evil.2.Heaven-"A world of love without any hatred".3.Hell-"A world of hatred, where there is no love." Why does hell exist, for what purpose has God created it?(and exist it does, even though many in our generation do not believe there is such a place as 'A Literal Hell')-"it is a world prepared on purpose for the expression of God's wrath." What is the object of God's wrath? It is sin, which is the work of sinners.Who will be in hell?Unrepentant, unbelieving, unforgiven sinners. There was a popular saying 'God loves the sinner and hates the sin'(as if sin as an entity will be judged, but not sinners)-those who live in sin,a principle of evil has no being,it is the person who sins and rebels against God,that person(whose sins are not covered by the blood of Christ)will suffer eternally in hell under God's wrath and judgement.

Heaven-A world of love is taken from Jonathan Edward's classic work 'Charity And Its Fruits'.It is his exposition of I Corinthians chapter 13.His most well known sermon is 'Sinners In The Hands Of An Angry God',but he gives us here one of the best descriptions of heaven which stands alongside of John Bunyan's picture of heaven in 'The Pilgrim's Progress',two off the best descriptions of heaven that have ever been published.

In "Heaven A World of Love" we get a glimpse of Jonathan Edwards more as a loving shepherd and less as the "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God" revivalist. This is a small book - literally a "Pocket Puritan" - yet filled with much to chew on and digest. It is Edwards at his literary best, with words obviously flowing not only from his pen but also from his heart - and mingled, no doubt, with his tears. Edwards' descriptions of heaven enthrall the heart while his warnings about missing it ring with truth and urgency.

Highly recommended!
