Christian Spirituality for Seekers, as a title, reflects this tension. The subtitle demonstrates the invitation will come through an analysis of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. Haight sets the direction of this work by noting the context out of which it grew. Part II contains a set of reflections on subjects either drawn from the Exercises or based on them. Haight writes out of his imaginative immersion with his audiences and the text and experience of the Exercises, intending to guide contemporary persons in an analogous journey to the one Ignatius originally set out.

Haight discussed who make up today's seekers and if the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola, a 16th century priest and founder of the Society of Jesus, can be relevant to them. He also explained how the Exercises possess a powerful appeal for all people. These ideas are further developed in his most recent book, "Christian Spirituality for Seekers: Reflections on the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola" (Orbis 2012). The Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola consist of a series of meditations and contemplations on the life of Jesus, aimed at promoting spiritual depth and discernment about how to live. They form the basis for Jesuit spirituality and formation. But their influence extends much wider, to religious congregations, spiritual directors, and countless others. In this work, based on his experience of leading study of the Exercises in a pluralistic environment, Fr. Haight has set out to write an introduction aimed broadly at all spiritual seekers, even those outside the Christian family. His focus is the humanity and the spirituality of Jesus. Thus, his work functions not just as an introduction to the Exercises but also as an introduction to spirituality. At the same time, it serves as an introduction to Christianity, which emerges in a new light not as a set of beliefs, but as a way of life, modeled on the spirituality of Jesus.

Haight's book uses the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius to interpret the story of Jesus for three audiences: those who know and are living the way of the Chrisian tradition; those seekers who are not Christian "but know that the Christian tradition has provided meaning for countless people over the past two millennis"; and, the secular person in a Western urban culture who has never been exposed to religious sensibilities of the story of Jesus. The rewards to the deliberate reader/seeker of Haight's book are countless. It is helpfu if the reader has a prior understanding of the meaning of interpretation but the explanation is so thorough that with intentional reading one comprehends.
Although I read most of the book during November, I'd recommend this as a "January book" a month in which we often reflect on carving out a path for a new period in our lives. Haight directs the seeker through the Ignatian process of discernment and decision in leading a meaningful life.
This is by no means an easy, quick read but so worth the journey!

I am reading this book for a class learning to direct the Spiritual Exercises. He gives a wonderful background to Ignatian Spirituality and each week's theme. Great book as a companion to the exercises themselves.
