I purchased the paperback edition of this book for a Lenten sermons series I was preaching and found it to be extremely helpful. It provides solid academic background with detailed insights and helpful socio-historic notes. Unfortunately the kindle edition is so garbled it is useless. There are typos and hard line breaks and words merged together. The tables don't translate at all and you can't even piece together what they are supposed to be. If the publisher had even looked at it after scanning the book in, there is no way they would have let this go out as a legitimate edition of the book. If I were the author I would be extremely disappointed because his solid work has been rendered moot because of the formatting.

However, I can recommend the actual print edition without hesitations: Encountering Jesus: Character Studies in the Gospel of John

`In this careful and creative study, Bennema challenges the widely held view that John's characters are types or symbols and successfully demonstrates that each character in John has a distinctive individual profile in their interactions
with Jesus. This book opens an important new window on how John tells the story of Jesus.'
