Christians believe in the bodily resurrection. Eastern Mysticism teaches uniting with the "oneness" of the universe, thereby (with its many different brands of teaching) connecting with the divine whole and being part of the divine through your own efforts. I have not read this book in particular but I have read many other books by Paramhansa Yogananda, this book is about deciphering what the Bible truly means and draws many parallel between Yogic systems of spiritual evolution and what was mentioned on the Bible.

Low_Skill_But_Happy_Deagle

A must read for anyone on the spiritual path can read. As someone who grew up wih Christianity but then later strayed away from it due to the church system (Church-ianity), this book did an amazing job reconnecting me with the teachings of Jesus at a point where I am now ready and receptive to hear what he was actually teaching (why Jesus spoke in parables is explained in the book as well). Yogananda provides a perfect break down and description of the teachings of Jesus. Also shows all the parallel teachings with other teachings as well as points out many scientific references documenting what Yogananda was teaching at that time that have since been discovered. This book is life changing while also being entertaining and is hard to put down. I put this book right up there with the Bhagavad Gita.

Paramahansa Yogananda has become my favorite author and guru. I am a minister yet i am learning so much from this and his other books. And they are validating things that i knew intuitively when i was a little girl. Everything is possible. Everyone, no matter what religion you follow, can benefit from his books. Wish i had known him. I actually give this 10 stars. The footnotes alone are worth gold.

This is a detailed commentary on the Christian gospels, giving the primary position to the Gospel of John (appropriately). Some other commentaries give a lot of detail regarding the various early manuscripts of these documents and what we know about the writers and the times in which they were written. That kind of commentary often does little indeed for a person who wants to know what the scripture means and how our own lives ought to change in light of that scripture. So, we could say that most commentaries do not represent "engineering theology" as I think they should. It is true that some more recent commentaries do have a more pastoral "what does it mean" character.

Unique in all the literature, this is an explanation of the very detailed meaning of the scripture given by a person known to be a very high level and accomplished mystic, a person of stature, of expertise of that kind. So, it would be a poor idea to dismiss this book quickly. The author claims to have met with Jesus in mystical vision and to have had from Jesus Himself explanations of these true meanings. That would not be credible for me, but, then, I am not a great mystic. It is, of course, possible for him. Mystics can have that sort of experience, no doubt about it---and that's for sure.

Many of the detailed explanations of comments of this book are unexpected, even to a person who has studied religious matters seriously for a long time. On several points, it does disagree with the usual teachings of standard Christian Churches, including my own church. An individual person would have no particularly good way to choose which teaching would be correct, but it is, I think, very useful to see this interpretation or teaching. In the end, the author claims that Jesus' true, core teaching is fully consistent with the Bhagavad Gita, and that it re-iterates, in esoteric ways, the path to spiritual growth that is often known as Raja Yoga in the east. So, the suggestion is that Jesus was teaching something equivalent to Raja Yoga as the right way for development.

This is not wholly satisfactory, since this book doesn't tell exactly how the recommended practice would be done. For that, other works would be required. It isn't really possible for an uninitiated person to know clearly whether or not this esoteric meaning is real. It is good notification, and it is an idea worth considering. Still, it would be difficult to know for myself just whether or not it is true. I would like to see for myself, to know for myself.

My own opinion is that some aspect of the message of Jesus has been omitted or slightly distorted in the teaching I have received from standard sources. If that were not so, I would expect that the lives of all the people sincerely trying to follow Jesus as the Way would display in their own lives very great presence and working of the Holy Spirit. I would expect that many would find the experience "I and the Father are One." It doesn't really appear that many do. So, something seems to have gone a little wrong. Maybe this, that Paramahamsa Yogananda is saying, might be the missing piece. I don't know---and still don't have a good way to find out. Still, it is a unique insight and may be helpful.

X-MEN

This is a great read for only the serious Truth seeker. Although somewhat poorly edited, tangential at times, and insanely long, it is full of info you won't find other places. Be sure to read all the footnotes that contain a wealth of information often based on scientific studies and historical scholarship. Knowledge of Yogic and Hindu philosophy and verbiage is very helpful. If you are not, the text could sound overwhelming and possibly absurd. But don't give up, there is a wealth of info in these volumes that can take any true spiritual aspirant to their next level of understanding.

This review is for the Kindle version. Much to my dismay, I discovered that it only has 15 chapters so is a much shorter version compared to the paperback. I will now be ordering the paperback but wanted to warn other Kindle buyers so that they are aware and will not be disappointed.

There is a review on here that expresses exactly how I feel (and of course I neglected to note the writer); but, while I also understood and (still) understand the teachings of most of the churches I have attended I felt that "something" was missing. Well, this book expands on that something. Out of all of the books that I have reviewed and commented that I wanted to go back and re-read, this is the only one where I have finished reading it and almost immediately started back over for a more thorough reading. I do hope to achieve the status where I won't be needing any worldly books because I will have truly made contact and am communing with God, as we are meant to do, but until that time this book will remain as my top resource for spiritual matters --after the Bible. (If I just had to choose a con to this book it would be that it is not available as a download so that it can be searched quickly.)

Very good work. Christians who secretly don't believe all the crap they get from their fundamentalist minister should read this. Most Christian ministers have an infantile belief system based on fear and belief in a state of separation from God and each other which does not exist. Yogananda sheds much needed light.
