Old Testament Exegesis: A Primer for Students and Pastors. by Douglas K.

Thoroughly tested and proven, this unique outline method actually guides one through the process of exegesis. Douglas Stuart here demonstrates how exegesis can be changed from a difficult, academic exercise into a practical way to discover what the Bible has to say to us today. "I have set out," writes Stuart, "to present a step-by-step guide to Old Testament exegesis that would be nontechnical and simple without being simplistic, that would explain not only the procedures but the goals of exegesis, and that would serve as a handbook for reference as the student or pastor does the actual work of exegesis." For students, Stuart offers a twelve-step outline for producing a complete, formal exegesis. For pastors, he provides a separate, shorter outline that pastors, even with limited time schedules, can use to interpret passages every week. Also included is an extensive bibliographical guide that evaluates over '180 reference works, including lexicons, histories, atlases, and preaching guides. OLD TESTAMENT EXEGESIS - an essential tool for those wanting to interpret the Bible's message responsibly. Douglas Stuart is Associate Professor of Old Testament at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary He has studied at Yale Divinity School and Harvard University (8.A., Ph.D.).

This thorough and scholarly resource book is an invaluable guide to the process of determining the meaning of Old Testament passages. It contains examples and though it is written for scholars and pastors, it is accessible (and provides helpful guidance) to the layperson, such as myself, that desires to develop a less superficial understanding of scripture. The bibliography in the back is terrific and is probably worth the cost of the book by itself.
