I deeply enjoyed the 26 acrostic puzzles on the Autumn/Fall season. Some of these poems are so good that they remind me of well crafted haiku. Each of the 26 poems chooses a single word progressing through the alphabet (so acorn, barn, corn dark..) and turns that word into an acrostic poem. The poems cover topics from the months of October, November, and December. Thanksgiving is mentioned, but not the holidays of Christmas or Halloween. The images appeared to be block prints and I found them beautiful - they added to the text and feel of the season, but without overpowering the beauty of the words themselves. Overall, the images and text paints a world that is in the far north where freezing temperatures occur in fall and perhaps even some snow, icicles, and frost. In Southern California, we have none of those things in fall. Yes we have pumpkins, apples, and colder weather, but not to the degree portrayed in this book. There are also some words I would have chosen differently - m is for mouse but I would have done a harvest moon, Y is for year but I would be for Yuletide for Christmas, and H is for horse but I would have done Halloween in a non-scary way. I also did not like that on the x page it said trees slept until May - I think they sprout leaves and flowers much earlier like in March. Overall, I still think this is a valuable book to teach my son what the seasons are like. I am sad that these books are no longer in print. How could our society to leave such a wonderful book to the past?

We loved this book! I used it to create our own acrostic poem for autumn. EXCELLENT!!! I will be purchasing the entire series! Thank you Steven for such a great work to introduce younger ones to acrostic poetry and to help inspire their own creativity! I even wrote a blog post about our lesson using your book- purplewillowgypsy.com.

I bought this whole series of books to teach the differences of seasons to lower grades. The things you get to do in each season gets highlighted with fantastic pictures and fun rhymes.

My therapy kids and other staff members at Preschool enjoyed the beauty and clarity of this book. It has become part of the seasonal books used at school.
I got this book from the library - it is recommended in the book called "Books Children Love" - and I would add it to mine because I like it as much - if not more than - my 3 year old. Totally makes you experience autumn - pure poetry, and that includes the illustrations which are marvelous.
