I think this book is an excellent choice for a unit on Insects or on the Spring garden. The illustrations are very soft (the author created silkscreens and painted them with watercolor and gouache) and sweet. The wide variety of insects illustrated makes this one a keeper. Pictured are: bumblebee, butterfly, june bug, cricket, ladybug, (spider -- NOT an insect -- the 8 legs are clearly shown if you want to point them out), leafhopper, dragonfly, katydid. The flowers pictured are daffodil, tulip, iris, poppy, rose, zinnia, morning glory, lily, daisy, and sunflower. Although the test is presented as a guessing game, it's not a hide and seek. The flower is on the facing page of the riddle so your child will easily be able to respond. The only exception is the sunflower since that is done as a two-page spread (you turn the book sideways so the flower is shown in all its height).

All in all, a marvelous choice, with the exception of the spider and there's not much you can do about that; spiders seem to be included in most insect books unfortunately. Try to find this one for your preschooler. I do agree that Amazon's price does seem a bit high plus they have quite a long wait time -- we got our copy at a used book sale. Check your library, too.

I like this book overall. The illustrations are pretty. It's a good tool to teach children about different types of flowers and different types of bugs. My main complaint is that it is too short. I might not mind that if I had bought a board book for a couple of bucks. For a hard-back book that costs as much as this one does, I'd prefer a little more for my money.

We love Anne Rockwell's simple, beautiful illustrations. I love the pretty flowers and my 2 y.o. loves all of the different bugs. :)
Exellent
