This book is dedicated to my family - because otherwise I'd never hear the end of i.Nadine - Warm, kind, and considerate, I am all of these. more than any of your other grandchildren do, I swear.

Playing with Fire book. Playing with Fire continues right where Skulduggery Pleasant left off. An evil force is still trying to release Faceless Ones, and our heroes, Skulduggery and Valkyrie, have to stop it. Just like with the first novel, I got just what I expected: a thrilling, funny and action packed book, that I would fly through.

Skulduggery hesitated for a split second. The threat the Grotesquery would pose is a little bigger than that. She was also faced with taking a new name. Everyone, Skulduggery had told her, has three names: the name they are born with, the name they are given, and the name they take. Theoretically, it would be able to summon the Faceless Ones back to this world, by opening a portal through realities. The name they are born with, their true name, lies buried deep in their subconscious. The name they are given, usually by their parents, is the only name most people will ever know.

Skulduggery Pleasant is a series of fantasy novels written by Irish author Derek Landy. The books revolve around the adventures of the skeleton detective, Skulduggery Pleasant, his protegé, Valkyrie Cain, along with other friends. The central story arc concerns Valkyrie's struggle to stop evil forces threatening the world, finally find justice for her late uncle's death, and her internal struggle to resist the darkness within.

Skulduggery Pleasant: Playing With Fire is the second book in the nine-book series by Derek Landy. It is about the now thirteen year old Valkyrie Cain, (previously known as Stephanie Edgley), and the detective Skulduggery Pleasant as they try to stop the evil Adept, Baron Vengeous from obtaining Lord Vile's Necromancer armour and bringing back the Grotesquery.

You come into our lives, you take every thin'! Throughout the years you got little pieces of me, of my very soul, and now? Now you got my damn straight razor! How am I supposed to kill people?

Derek Landy m I supposed to even shave?". Behind Sanguine, Baron Vengeous strode in off the street and stood in the mouth of the alley. Get it done," Vengeous called out angrily. Yes sir," Sanguine responded, then lowered his 91 voice. See that? You're gettin' me in trouble with the boss.

Meet Skulduggery Pleasant: detective, sorcerer, warrior. With Serpine dead, the world is safe once more. At least, that’s what Valkyrie and Skulduggery think, until the notorious Baron Vengeous makes a bloody escape from prison, and dead bodies and vampires start showing up all over Ireland.

Skulduggery and Valkyrie are facing a new enemy: Baron Vengeous, who is determined to bring back the terrifying Faceless Ones and is crafting an army of evil to help him. Added to that, Vengeous is about to enlist a new ally (if he can raise it from the dead): the horrible Grotesquery, a very unlikable monster of legend.

Once Vengeous is on the loose, dead bodies and vampires start showing up all over Ireland. Now pretty much everybody is out to kill Valkyrie, and the daring detective duo faces its biggest challenge yet.

But what if the greatest threat to Valkyrie is just a little closer to home?

The second installment of the Skulduggery Pleasant series. I found myself laughing with the characters. It was witty, funny, and tense. With these types of books they give you 50 pages to resolve everything and you're freaking out how they could possibly do it.

The humor was the same, and maybe even more funny than the last one. The plot left me stressed for the characters. If you're questioning whether to read this, then let me tell you, that it is a must to read this. I couldn't put it down. I read it all in one day, staying up into the early hours of the morning because I needed to know what happened next.

Trust me when I say that you'll love this if you enjoyed the first book.

My 14 year old has been 'too cool' for anything other than pewdie-pie and homestuck for over a year. Her teacher had her read this for an assignment and she wouldn't put it down. She asked if she could go TO THE LIBRARY for another of the series and I nearly had a heart attack. I had to see what made this book more interesting to her over harry potter or twilight and it really is entertaining. She loved it. That says more than any review I could write. My anti-book, too-cool-for-school teenage daughter now wants every book in the series. THANK YOU for pulling her away from YOUTUBE. HIGHLY recommend. There's just something to these. I had to read a chapter in, in order to be pulled in, but it was worth it. I can't wait to read the whole series now!!

Playing with Fire was not quite as funny as the first book. If I had to sum it up in one sentence it would be, Extended fight scenes!
We meet several new enemies in this installment who have a new diabolical plan to bring back the Faceless Ones. Fast paced, and action packed! I hope there is another book soon!

Giant spiders = yuck

It's not Tolstoy, I will agree. Yet, it's fun, and frankly, I feel the world might be a better place with a Valkyrie Cain and Skulduggery Pleasant in it. I gave this book to my grandson; he loved it. He laughed and thought the adventure was marvelous.

I am a great fan of the entire Skulduggery Pleasant series. The dialogue is witty in a noirish sort of way, and well beyond what you usually encounter in books of this type aimed at this audience. The characters are better developed, the plots are more engaging, the action pieces flow well, and the overarching series story is satisfying. There is an awful lot of violence and mayhem, but is more cartoonish than disturbing.

These can be hard books to find, and they never appear on anyone's recommended lists, but they deserve to be more than cult items.

I think his audience would have been better served with less swearing. engaging characters, easy to follow plot, the fact that the protagonist's family was not in immediate danger placed another star on the rating. the suspense and possibility of danger was there without actually causing fear or anxiety for the mom and dad.

I liked the darkness and difficulties. It engages the imagination and humor while not getting too heavy for an average ya reader.
Lots going on- tons of new plot points- interesting powers and characters. I’m glad I finally picked up the series!
