I adored these as a kid and read them now to my 9-year-old, who loved them, too. I was surprised at how many dated references there are that needed explanation. I only remembered the kids in one of the books not liking Charley Chaplin, a reference I still recognized in my day, but there are a number of others. There are also many literary references that kids today may not get. I think these provide a good entry point for a young child's understanding of history. My son wants to read the rest of the Edward Eager books that weren't in this set, which, by the way, comes in a very flimsy box.

Having read and loved these as a child, I am tickled that my 7 yr old son can't wait to read whichever one we're on at bedtime. I only wish there were more. The adventures of Jane, Mark, Katharine and Martha are our favorite of the year. Magic and trouble and adventures through time that include King Arthur's court, talking cats (definitely the funniest part) and enchanted lakes and wise but no nonsense talking turtles are just the tip of the iceberg in this wonderful, classic series. I have been enjoying re-reading these at least as much as my seven year old son has! Fun to explain some of the older terms and references. It can be a real learning tool on how to be empathetic to others because there are definitely some commonly held traditional beliefs mentioned--(mainly innocent 50s style thinking). So very enjoyable!

I discovered these books when I was nine, and that was half a century ago. They hold up well, I got this set for my grandchildren. A good combination of Eager's work. It would be nice if this set could have come in a more expensive hardcover edition but the fact they are still in print is a blessing. If you like gentle tales about siblings these are a treat. They make excellent bedtime stories for reading to little ones old enough to enjoy stories that will require several night's to complete.

My teacher read Half Magic to me when I was ten. I read it to my children and am now sharing the books with my grandchildren. These books promote reading and introduce and teach good literature to children.
Hidden Winter
Loved these books when I was growing up. They are still magical.

My 10 year old son loves these books and so do I. Even though he is a voracious reader and reads independently every chance he gets, he still enjoys having me read to him regularly. We recently read this series together and both enjoyed it. Sweet and innocent books with a wholesome feel but without being overly cheesy.
Classic childhood magic, and really good for 8 year olds and up. Adventures for children and the value of friendship.
