Cynthia Rylant, Arthur Howard (Illustrator). Be the first to ask a question about Mr. Putter & Tabby Run the Race. I heart Mr. Putter and Tabby. I'm sure a teenager could have shown me how to make a heart sign out of keyboard letters, but I am not that cool.

Cynthia Rylant, Arthur Howard (Illustrator). Lists with This Book. Martin S. Stoller's all time favourites. Rylant's beginning chapter books are so terrific for first- and second-graders just ready to tackle longer stories. They are full of comedic situations and gentle humor.

Mr. Putter is sure he is too old for birthday celebrations. Newbery Medalist Cynthia Rylant brings the peaceful sounds, sights, and characters of the coast vividly to life in the sixth book of the Lighthouse Family series, in which the family assists an otter in need. And that means he's also too old for model planes and balloons and candles and cake. On a lovely summer day, the lighthouse family hears the bell on the fog buoy ringing. It is an otter, whose sister is trapped in an old fishing net!

Mr. Putter and Tabby books bring so many laugh-out-loud moments, but with this particular story I'm tickled the most when Mr. Putter is "training" for the Senior Marathon and resorts to only "touching his knees" because he can no longer touch his toes... And then on race day, sees all of these other seniors touching their toes...and his only thought is "Uh-Oh".

My daughter and I stumbled upon "Mr. Putter and Tabby Take the Train" at the library and have been hooked on the series ever since...

The books have wonderful, come-to-life stories with fascinating artwork that makes the book so complete you feel as if you really know Mr. Putter, Mrs. Teaberry and their adorable pets, Tabby and Zeke.

I love that my six-year-old treasures this series of books so intently - especially since she can't really relate to the two main characters! The vocabulary is simple yet encouraging...excellent for a young reader! ...with stories that are always fun for the adults in the family :)
We just discovered the Mr. Putter books about a month ago. Since we are grandparents who take care of our grandchildren over 40 hours a week, we do a lot of reading. Reading about Mr. Putter doing his exercises so reminds us of our difficulties doing our exercises. We always get a good laugh out of these books and so do the grandkids. These books are delightful and also help kids identify with older folks. We look forward to library day and checking out new ones.
Excellent condition.
Got this for my grandson! He likes Mr. putter and Tabby.
Grand daughter loves all these books!

Such a cute story.. love it!
As listed. Love being able to buy cheap books that are in great condition for my classroom as I love filling my library with new books (well new books to the students).
The entire Mr. Putter and Tabby series is very good, but this rises above the others because it is so on target for adults who aren't really into exercise. Mr. Putter gets convinced to run a race by his energetic neighbor. Naturally, he does it for the train set prize, not the exercise. But, observing his training routine is well worth it. Kids will enjoy the story, but adults may find it even more entertaining.
