From School Library Journal. Kindergarten-Grade 2-William is scared of bears and the place under the stairs. I had heard of "The Bear under the Stairs" when listening to a presentation on the internet. Since I am by career a first grade teacher, I felt this was a great story to use with children to talk with them about their fears. Since I was not going to use the book on a daily basis, I did not feel that I needed to spend a lot of money for a new book.
I really enjoyed reading The Bear Under The Stairs. Helen Cooper does a wonderful job of portraying a young child's fears in a lilting rhyming verse that keeps the story light
I really enjoyed reading The Bear Under The Stairs. Helen Cooper, who wrote and illustrated this story made the concept come to life. I was immediately connected to childhood fears and imaginary friends. Cooper was able to capture the ideas that children often have about whats in the closet, under the bed or in this case under the stairs. The character of William, who is the child in the story is so afraid that there is a grizzly bear in the closet under the stairs. Helen Cooper does a wonderful job of portraying a young child's fears in a lilting rhyming verse that keeps the story light.

As pictured, the bear is dauntingly large but not entirely fierce; pre-text takes show him arriving by bus, with luggage, an umbrella, and a mischievous glint in his eye. Still, he lurks in corners and under tables, so William finds it prudent to feed him; with eyes shut tight, he tosses offerings under the stairs until the smell alerts his parents and William explains; then he and Mom clean out the closet, shine light on the old chair with a furry rug over it, and shop for a cuddly teddy. The Bear Under The Stairs. Cooper has a shadowy style which she uses to great effect, wafting us into the surreal imagination of a boy determined to stay up all night". He is absolutely sure there's a great big and probably hungry grizzly bear lurking there. He is utterly convinced that the bear will gobble him up if he doesn't feed it, so every day he carefully opens the door, throws in some food and slams it shut quickly - wham, bang, thump! Find out what happens when a nastly smell pervades the house and Mum and William decide to investigate.
