A Christmas classic returns to Little Golden Books, with beautiful new artwork by a beloved Golden Books illustrator! . SHEILAH BECKETT (born 1913) turned 100 shortly after finishing her illustrations for The Nutcracker.

A Christmas classic returns to Little Golden Books, with beautiful new artwork by a beloved Golden Books illustrator! The Nutcracker is back in print as a Little Golden Book. She has brought to life dozens of children's books in her long career, including the recently reissued Little Golden Book The Twelve Dancing Princesses, originally published in 1954. Entirely self-taught, she was the first woman to work at the prestigious Charles E. Cooper advertising art studio, where she illustrated advertisements, album covers, and Christmas cards.

The book is in new condition and was donated to the Irving L Young Library, with all proceeds going towards funding the children's learning center. The book tells the tale of the classic story.

As others have suggested, this Grimms Fairy Tales type version of "The Nutcracker" is appropriate for older (9+) children who can tolerate a bit of gore in their stories. My granddaughter, who has read several of the Harry Potter books, enjoyed it, but it was not the cup of tea of my younger, more sensitive children. It is magnificently illustrated by Sendak. I just suggest that you read it first before gifting.

We had tickets to the Nutcracker ballet, so I bought this to read to my kids (4 and 2) before we attended the show so they would have an idea on what it would be about. The book does an excellent job of telling the story and is just the right length. I definitely recommend.

I bought this for my 2 1/2yo before we went to see a performance of the Nutcracker so she would be familiar with the story to help her pay attention. This version is simple, not too long, true to the traditional story and has nice, kid-friendly illustrations. This is now one of my toddler's favorite books and while she enjoyed the ballet performance, weeks later she still wants to read the book every day and talks about it constantly. Plus hearing her say "Herr Drosselmeyer" is hilarious.

It's a great story filled with battles and magic. But it's in a very old fashioned language style that will require translation for the kids and does not come trippingly to the tongue. I don't mind this: my husband does. Also, it's the story the ballet is based upon, but great artistic liberties were taken in translating the story for the stage. You can see the roots of the story, but it's drastically different. My little boys were very annoyed that the ballet didn't follow the story and kept whispering to me throughout the ballet about it. While it was a good conversation piece afterwards I think it hurt their enjoyment. Next year before we go see the Nutcracker I will read them one of the many books based on the ballet instead. ;-)

The seller's description read: "Hardcover with many tiny tears to edges of dustjacket and only very gentle wear. Still very tight, bright, clean and 99% unmarked." As you can see from the photo, that is incredibly inaccurate. This was supposed to be a gift for a child's birthday, and obviously I cannot use this.

Used this to introduce my granddaughter to the story of the Nutcracker prior to attending the ballet. She loved it.

Classic story with the most beautiful illustrations! Lovely enough that we will be reading it year round.
Sooooooo many words. Wasn't quite what I expected. Small, fine print and very word heavy, not an easy read at all.
