The history of Rhode Island is an overview of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations and the state of Rhode Island from pre-colonial times to the present. Indians occupied most of the area comprising Rhode Island, including the Wampanoag, Narragansett, and Niantic tribes. Many were killed by diseases, possibly contracted through contact with European explorers (though no definitive source has been proven), and through warfare with other tribes.

Because Rhode Island is comprised of a small crescent of land and a large number of islands, the sea has always been important to its development. Natural forces have also shaped its history. In particular, hurricanes like Carol in 1954, Diane in 1955, and Gloria in 1985 have caused millions of dollars of damage to coastal areas. On the other hand, cool ocean breezes even during the hottest months of the summer have long made Rhode Island a place for the wealthy to escape the unpleasant weather elsewhere

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the Union, and is often overlooked by tourists and historians for its neighboring big brother, Massachusetts. Rhode Island was founded on the idea of religious freedom, which is why you can find many old religious structures throughout the state. Built in 1699 in Newport, the Meeting House is one of the oldest structures in the state and showcases the influence and importance the Quakers had in the area. In 1905, it ceased being a Meeting House, instead becoming a recreational center for African-Americans until the 1970’s, when it was donated to the Historical Society and restored. It has a plain design, but that is the point.
