Thompson's narrative relates the Monitor's history in an exciting yet responsible way, and Day's attractive illustrations, evidently in ink and watercolor, enhance the drama and clarify details. Although the book has no back matter, not even an index, it clearly presents a story that will interest many young readers. Perfect for a late-2nd Grade to mid-3rd Grade reader with an interest in this aspect of the Civil War. I bought it for a former student who stops by my classroom frequently.

We actually just read this book last night. My boys are 6 and 8 and they really enjoyed learning about the Civil War battleships. As a Social Studies teacher, I found it interesting as well. We now have a foundational knowledge of the construction and purpose of the battleships. If you like learning about battleships and/or Civil War then this is an informative book that teaches about an area that most children’s books don’t cover.

Perfect for a late-2nd Grade to mid-3rd Grade reader with an interest in this aspect of the Civil War. I bought it for a former student who stops by my classroom frequently. Hopefully, public education will soon return to the study and appreciation of our unique history rather than drilling kids with Common Core crud that feeds into standardized testing and the treasured test scores. By it for kid.
