This is chiefly an archaeological adventure. Readers will find out about how the body casts seen today in Pompeii were made, about the reasons behind Pompeian graffiti, and about Pompeian lifestyle. They will also get to see major buildings such as the Pompeian theater. Children will be attracted to the text because the author is constantly getting Isabel in tense situations. This time she travels through the W.I.S.P, but in an unexpected manner. She has to use the W.I.S.P to save herself from falling from a wooden structure, to save a researcher from getting lost, to save herself from an earthquake, and finally, to save herself from the Vesuvian eruption. This use of tension is great to entice young readers into the historical information. The information and language used is appropriate for lower level learners and ESL learners. As usual, these texts have a table of contents, glossary, index, and "more about" section that improve reader's understanding of the text.

Isabelle Soto travels through time and space with her handy gadget the W.I.S.P. She starts out by going to modern day Pompeii, meeting up and tagging along with an author who is doing research and her official tour guide. The author and Isabel travel back in time 17 years prior to the eruption of Vesuvius, then jump ahead to the dangerous day itself. This is a graphic novel and the graphics are wonderful. The story is entertaining but is more educational and factual than just pure fiction. There are fact boxes every now and then telling more information on the topic, a page at the end that lists various information about the topic and the book has an index. An enjoyable and interesting concept for a hi-low reader that imparts a nice dose of history. Reading Level Gr. 3-4. Interest Level Gr. 3-9.
