Did Marc Tyler Nobleman think that this exchange between the engineer expert and the gentlemen who felt that they had already spent enough was too trivial, or too damning, to be mentioned? The answer is blowing in the wind, or perhaps in his notation of other trivial details, such as the fact that on the day of the flood, the owner of the club sent three (3!) telegrams to the towns downstream warning them that the dam might break.

IWAS
"The Klondike Gold Rush" is a skimpy 4th grade level booklet that in no way reflects what I remember listening to my grandfather's stories of the gold rush, and going through his and my great-uncle Arne's photo albums. A much better adult book is Pierre Berton's classic.

There's no mention of the oppressive sub-zero cold that lasted for months, nor of the mercury and cyanide poisoning involved in processing gold. The major depression in the U.S. that triggered a lot of the Klondike "gold fever" followed a decades-long surge in immigration from Europe which stressed facilities and resources throughout the U.S. People came to the Klondike from all over the world, not just the U.S. The new railroad across the U.S. allowed much quicker travel to Seattle's port with sea transport to the gateway to the Klondike. There's no mention of the pervasive presence of prostitutes. There's no discussion of how all those thousands of people were fed.

Of all the books on the Klondike Gold Rush, this one ranks at the bottom of adult books but would be suitable for 4th through 6th grade reading, which may have been its target audience.

This is a pretty skimpy elementary level book - maybe ok for 5th or 6th graders but a bit basic for adult readers.
