I think this is the best book available for parents AND children, dealing with the horror of a broken family. My daughter (age 12) carried this book with her for many weeks. She was able to contact her father and begin a series of meetings each Monday evening, which gave them both the opportunity to openly discuss their feelings. Good and bad. The book helped her to be honest about her feelings and helped us as parents be honest about ours.

She eventually started a group of children at her school to meet and discuss their own family issues. She shared this book with them. She worked thru her anger at her father for leaving and they shared a loving relationship until he, unfortunately, died of leukemia, when she was in Medical School, years later.

I credit this book for helping me and my daughter come to grips with one of the most painful experiences any family can go thru. I also suggested she see a therapist at different intervals of her development ......I did not want her to grow up not being able to trust any man. As the Father is the first man a female ever loves it is vitally important they learn to negotiate, express feelings and to forgive. Finally reaching a place of peace for all involved.

I highly recommend this book to any family dealing with divorce!

An OLD FRIEND - having purchased dozens over the years for use with Children of Divorce workshops.
Some parts are dated, but there is some good information here - especially parts about "when your mother talks about your father" and v.v.
Very powerful when BOTH parents are willing to read with/to their children. Older children can read to younger - it is equally relevant to al ages, though appears more so to the younger set. A+

This book has been around for a while. My father read it with me when my folks split decades ago. It helped me then and again when I read it in my 20's. I've purchased it over and over again for anyone I know going through a divorce to help their kids.

I have had a copy of this books since I was a child in the 70's. It helped me make sense of a difficult situation when my parents divorced. I keep a copy with me so that when I meet someone with kids and they are having problems telling their kids, I can give this book to help out. The information in this book is priceless and very easy to understand, so if you are looking for some help, have your kids read this book. I hope it helps your kids and much as it did for me.

best resource around. Have used it for years. I always try to give a copy to a family when they are going through divorce. Was able to pick up a dozen at a buck apiece a while ago and they went fast. Everyone always expresses gratitude as to how helpful the book has been for them. Gardner's other works are fantastic. I highly recommend him.

I believe Gardner's book: The Boys and Girls Book About Single Parent Families is a much better book as far as things to pull out of it and utilize to support children and families impacted by divorce. Unfortunately, that book was not available for purchase and it has been many years since I have had it to use.

Older advice. Not sure what I think about it.
One out of many divorce books for children my son was into/absorbed.

It felt straightforward and healthy.

It seemed a little old school as well, but in a timeless way.
