One Hundred Is a Family Paperback – January 1, 1900.

One Hundred Is a Family book. The author, Pam Munoz Ryan, is a former educator and wrote this book in hopes that it would lead children to see families as a patchwork of possibilities. I believe that by focusing on counting instead of the unique types of families, the author helps children see how even when families are different, they can work together to accomplish great things.

New York Times Best Selling Author - Pam Muñoz Ryan has written over thirty books for young people, from picture books for the very young to young adult novels. Counting first from one to ten and then by tens to one hundred, this warm-hearted picture book celebrates the many meanings of family. Illustrated by Benrei Huang.

PreSchool-Grade 2-Beginning with the statement that "one is a family finding a place to call home," the text goes on to count to 10, then by 10s to 100, describing various groups as "families": for example, 6 is a family passing bread around, 60 is a family sharing a neighborhood street. The intent seems to be to encourage young readers to feel comfortable and loving with their neighbors and friends, but to call fellow apple pickers a family is to diminish the definition.

Esperanza thought she'd always live with her family on their ranch in Mexico - she'd always have fancy dresses, a beautiful home, and servants. But a sudden tragedy forces Esperanza and Mama to flee to California during the Great Depression, and to settle in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Esperanza isn't ready for the hard labor, financial struggles, or lack of acceptance she now faces. When their new life is threatened, Esperanza must find a way to rise above her difficult circumstances - Mama's life, and her own, depend on it.

I've never seen a criticism in an item's description before, and in this case it's absolutely unnecessary! This book is a great counting exercise (my preschooler isn't interested in making sure there are exactly sixty folks pictured for that particular page, for example), with the important underlying themes of inclusion, diversity and community. It isn't didactic; it doesn't attempt to explain diversity, just shows loving families of all types and all sizes having a nice time together. Refreshing and sweet!
