Andy Sanders and his grandmother are preparing for their annual "unbirthday" event. They always set one day a year to celebrate what is not their birthday with a special gift exchange. The problem is Andy has no money and he really wants to give his grandmother a special case for her binoculars. Andy and Delores Starbuckle decide to host a barn sale to help Andy raise money to buy his grandmother the case for her binoculars. With the huge success of the barn sale, he now has the money to purchase the binoculars, but wait, the binoculars are missing.

The mystery begins to take shape as Andy and Delores go on a mission to find the person who accidently bought the not for sale binoculars. Through listing clues as to who bought the binoculars leads these two young detectives on a twisting road of events. In the end he does track down the binoculars, but he has to purchase them. He doesn't have the money to buy the case to go with the binoculars so what is he to do?

This stories underlying theme to the reader is about making sacrifices in the instance to make others happy. Andy sacrifices his bike in exchange for the case to make his grandmother happy which to him is more meaningful then his bike.
