This easy-to-read picture book features a repetitive, engaging text; a very popular subject; and an interesting subplot played out in the colorful illustrations. Boris von der Borch is a scruffy and fearless pirate who is nonetheless tender enough to cry when his pet parrot dies. While the brief text simply lists his attributes (and those of all other pirates), the energetic watercolors paint the larger picture.

Mem Fox's Tough Boris is a picture book about Boris Von Der Borch and his gang of pirates. for one pair of pages, and then "All pirates are greedy. They are the best pirates I've seen in over a dozen pirate picture books. While I'm at it, I'll salute the author and illustrator together for creating a pirate picture book which doesn't include any battles, swordplay, cannons, or gunplay. This book teaches a great lesson to the children.

This is one of my all-time favorite picture books. Notice, I did not say children's book. This is a book for all ages. I've read it to high school students and to preschoolers. This week I am reading it to my middle school students after a particularly hard week in which multiple deaths occurred at our local mall. It is a great way to deal with death and separation with a tender touch. Picture books are powerful tools for dealing with many of life's hardest issues.

My son made a 3-D poster using real yarn hear and a gold earring. His pirate book report was a super hit. The best part of the book however is the untold story of the stow away little boy that you see in every picture if you look for him and the relationship he has with the tough captain who turns out to be not so tough! I highly recommend this excellent book to anyone interested in pirates. It is now the favorite of my 7 year old.

Tough Boris has been one of my favorites over the years. I've bought several copies and shared them with children so they have the joy of looking at and reading the story. The illustrations are so intriguing as one observes all that is taking place at the same time. This book is one that you want to be sure to take your time with and enjoy. Kind of , "oh look there's the violin case in the boys hand, and oh look a pirate has it now. In the end it serves as the final resting place for the pirates bird that died and is buried at sea. Also for little guys hearing the story, the fact that pirates cry and so do I (the young boy) allows young ones to cry and not be ashamed. I just like it all.

Tough Boris is a fantastic picture book & well suited to reading with a gruff pirate-y voice (because all pirates are gruff). While the written story is about Boris and "all pirates," the illustrations tell the story of a young boy and what happens to him on the pirate ship. Not only is the book fun, it can lead to some great conversations with kids.
This is a wonderful book that I highly recommend. Children love it and so do I... my favorite Mem Fox book, and if I made a list of top picture books Boris would definitely be on it.

Tough Boris by Mem Fox is a must read-aloud selection for any elementary school to middle school classroom. It is a wonderful teaching tool for exploring characterizatioin and loss. The understated language juxtiposed with sensitively drawn illustrations allows children of all ages to explore their own feelings about losing someone or something you love and how people handle loss. The book gives children, especially boys, permission to reveal their emotions, letting them know that it is indeed normal to cry and express grief, and that we must look beyond superficial appearances and stereotypes to see into another person's heart. It is a beautiful and touching story and I have yet to read it to my students without shedding a tear or two myself.

This is a wonderful story about a pirate who's rough and tough on the outside, but has a soft side too. Death is treated matter-of-factly with no philosophical overtones (you fill in the blanks when they ask, "why did the parrot die", or "what happened when the parrot died?") and children identify with Boris about their self-concepts and reactions to conflict and fears in their life. In the end, Boris teaches children that it's okay to be a nice guy and still be tough, and that it's okay to be sad and cry sometimes. I recommend this book to children over the age of 4 (mainly because of the slightly scary pirate scenes involving angry faces, swords and scuffling-nothing gorry)- all the way through adulthood!

I love this book. Usedit for years in my kindergarten classes and continue to give as gifts. My 1 1/2 year old granddaughter loves it so much I neededto get a replacement copy. It is a sweet story balanced by the tough pirate...kids love it.
Even tough people cry.
