Kay Chorao, who raised a caterpillar to prepare for this book, has written and/or illustrated more than 70 books for children. Her detailed, expressive gouache and ink illustrations (reminiscent of Garth Williams's work in Charlotte's Web) make this sweet story of the wonder of nature and the power of hard work to cure loneliness absolutely irresistible. Chorao's (Little Farm by the Sea) quaint domestic drama centers on a lonely pig who bakes to lift his spirits and ultimately finds solace in nature. Whenever crafty Crow smells one of Pig's freshly made desserts, he swoops down and offers to trade something "magic" for the confection, promising that it will cure Pig's loneliness.

Kay Chorao's gentle text and lovely illustrations create a warm, sweet story about loneliness, patience, and the magic of friendship.

One of the most charming children's books ever written. This story about a lonely pig who loved to bake and his search for friendship has a lovely lesson about what it takes to be a friend and about the value of friendship. My daughter and I loved this book. We read it many, many times. And the artwork is exquisite!

As the volunteer librarian at my children's elementary school, I was recently given two hundred dollars to buy picture books for the school library. Pig and Crow was one of the books I chose. The illustrations are charming, the language is simple and strong, and the message is tender and heartwarming without being sappy. After buying the book for the library, I am buying a copy for myself so that I, too, can own Pig and Crow. (My eight-year-old twins also enjoyed it!)
