This is the best series of books I have found for history for 9-12 year olds. I teach 4th and 5th graders and they love these books. They have interesting pictures and are written at the perfect level. I like all the art project ideas they include, the organized method in which they are written, and the timeline which runs the bottom of the pages. This is a great resource. I can't recommend it highly enough.

In addition to being a great basic source book for information on ancient civilizations and classical Greece, this book offers illustrations, photographs, and timelines to convey information visually.

But even better are the projects -- each one with several color step-by-step photographs and detailed instructions -- which offer your child the kind of hands-on learning that makes the information stick in their minds.

Some projects are very simple, like air-dry clay seals and tokens. Some projects take a bit longer, like making a fresco (small and do-able). We skipped the recipes and making a scroll (although we did practice with the Greek alphabet), and I let my youngest make a chiton for his Build-a-Bear out of a ruined pillowcase (I didn't want to go fabric shopping for human-sized garments). For us, the best projects were the Parthenon, the papier-mache vase, and the Archimedes screw.

***update -- I am adding my son's completed Parthenon project in Customer Images. The project is on pp 34-37 in the book, and he made a few substitutions in materials. Check out his results.
